We were delighted to have host moderators David Lehmann and Carla Moscoso (both Cambridge) lead on this important conversation with Chilean scholars Cristina Dorador and Fernando Atria at our recent event on JUN 30 2021, part of the UCL Americas Latin American Studies series. Not only are Professors Dorador and Atria distinguished academics in their respective fields of sciences and law, but also members of the recently elected convention tasked with writing a new political constitution for Chile. They talked us through some of the challenges and opportunities arising from this momentous episode of Chilean history.

Luke de Noronha welcomes Robbie Shilliam, Professor of International Relations at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss his recent book 'Decolonizing Politics: An Introduction' (Polity Press, 2021). Across his writing, Robbie’s made several critical interventions on questions surrounding race, colonialism and global order, and in 'Decolonizing Politics' he methodologically looks at what it might mean to decolonize political science by reconceptualizing and reimagining the logics of the field.

Dr Malu Gatto (UCL Institute of the Americas) shares the latest in her research projects, interests and experiences.

Dr Hayes de Kalaf's research offers uncomfortable insights into the use and abuse of modern-day identity-based development 'solutions' for exclusionary and citizenship-stripping practices.

At this pre-launch of her first book, "Legal Identity, Race and Belonging in the Dominican Republic: From Citizen to Foreigner", Dr Hayes de Kalaf will present the definitive analysis of the events leading up to the controversial 2013 Constitutional Tribunal ruling which rendered the plaintiff Juliana Deguis Pierre stateless. The publication identifies a connection between the role of international actors in promulgating the universal provision of legal identity and links these with arbitrary measures to restrict access to citizenship paperwork from populations of (largely, but not exclusively) Haitian descent.

Eve Hayes de Kalaf has an extensive academic and professional background working in Latin America and the Caribbean. Eve is currently this year's Stipendiary Fellow at the Centre for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), Institute of Modern Languages Research at the University of London

We were delighted to host Dr Amy C. Offner (Associate Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania) as our guest to deliver the UCL Institute of the Americas 2021 Eleanor Roosevelt Lecture on June 3, 2021. She provided an overview of her latest book, 'Sorting Out the Mixed Economy: The Rise and Fall of Welfare and Developmental States in the Americas (Princeton University Press, 2019). It takes readers through half a century of US and Colombian history, offering a transnational history of state formation and capitalist reconstruction since 1945, showing the influence of Latin American developmentalism on the formation of the US welfare state and revealing the mid-century origins of practices that are regarded today as hallmarks of neoliberalism.

Amy's book won the First Monograph Prize from the Economic History Society; the Michael H. Hunt Prize for International History from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations, and the Murdo J. MacLeod Prize from the Latin American and Caribbean Section of the Southern Historical Association. It was also a finalist for the Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Book Prize and received an honourable mention for the Stuart L. Bernath Prize of the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.

These regiments were present during the Chesapeake campaign of 1814 and the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 but, more importantly, the idea of the West India Regiments loomed large in the American imagination. Concerns that black soldiers might entice wholesale desertion by enslaved people directed US military policy and even though the military contribution of the West India Regiments turned out to be small, Americans continued to be deeply concerned by the example they set long after the war was over.

Tim Lockley is a Professor of North American History at the University of Warwick. His most recent book is Military Medicine and Making of Race: Life and Death in the West India Regiments 1795-1874 (Cambridge University Press, 2020).

One of the ways in which eugenics became incorporated into mainstream society all around the world was through the birth control movement. Early twentieth-century birth control pioneers like Marie Stopes and Margaret Sanger were also ardent eugenicists, and their motives were bound up with imperial concerns about, as eugenicists saw it, the deterioration of the 'white race'. Their arguments were taken up in the cause of another imperialist concern, which was the growing population of non-white people in the colonies. In this episode, Subhadra and her guests consider how we can confront historical and contemporary eugenics practices in the continuing struggle for reproductive justice.

Guests: Kate Law is a feminist historian who specialises in twentieth-century Southern African history. She is currently a Nottingham Research Fellow in the School of History at the University of Nottingham, and a Research Fellow in the International Studies Group at the University of the Free State. Her first book, 'Gendering the Settler State: White Women, Race, Liberalism and Empire in Rhodesia, 1950-1980' was published by Routledge in 2016, and her current research project is 'Fighting Fertility: The British Anti-Apartheid Movement and the Politics of Race and Contraception in South Africa'.

Kalpana Wilson is a Lecturer in Geography and her research explores questions of race/gender, labour, neoliberalism, and reproductive rights and justice, with a particular focus on South Asia and its diasporas. She is the author of 'Race, Racism and Development: Interrogating History, Discourse and Practice' (Zed Books, 2012) and has published widely on race, gender, international development, women’s agency and rural labour movements.

Paige Patchin is a Lecturer in Race, Ethnicity and Postcolonial Studies, and one of the founding lecturers at the Sarah Parker Remond Centre. Paige is a feminist geographer whose work looks at structures of power in biological, health, and earth sciences. Her research interests include infectious disease, race, and empire, genetics and epigenetics, reproductive health, and the Anthropocene. Her current book project looks at the Zika public health emergency between Puerto Rico and the United States.

The places and spaces we inhabit profoundly affect our lives and how we live them in ways we need to think about more critically. At the launch of the project that is the subject of today's episode, Kamna Patel spoke to how people have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic by saying "It is not who we are and what we eat that will kill us, but where we live and where we work." Subhadra’s guests in this episode came together to write a curriculum to help students and researchers of the built environment be more mindful about the ways in which their discipline actively reinforces and reproduces racism and ableism.
