From 1992 to 2002, O’Brien investigated over 1,000 paranormal events reported in the San Luis Valley—located in south-central Colorado/north-central New Mexico. Working with law enforcement officials, ex-military, ranchers and an extensive network of skywatchers, he documented what may have been the most intense wave of unexplained activity ever seen in a single region of North America. His ten-year investigation resulted in the three books of his “mysterious valley” trilogy" and a book titled, "Stalking the Herd", which examines our relationship with cattle and how this has manifested into the modern “cattle mutilation” mystery. On episode 354 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, Steve Berg returns to give his fascinating solo presentation from Anomacon 2023, titled, The Weird Stuff: The Role of Absurdity and Surrealism in High Strange Encounters. In this presentation, Berg explains that when it comes to encounters with UFO occupants and cryptids, the cases most commonly used as examples for the strongest evidence are the ones that fit into the framework most easily with our sense of reality, often leaving out the really weird cases. But what if the weirdness was part of the point? Using encounter cases throughout history and focusing on the absurd qualities and “dreaminess” of these experiences, maybe we can discover that the more odd and surreal an encounter is, the bigger the imprint it makes.

On episode 351 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, we review the classic Flatwoods Monster case from a new perspective. On September 12th, 1952, a group of local boys and one of their mothers saw what they described as a "shooting star" that fell to earth on the top of a hill. They soon stumbled upon an object that was glowing and hissing. Near the glowing object they were terrified to see a huge creature, that would come to be known as the Flatwoods Monster. What was it? Where did it come from? Featuring rare audio from UFO researchers, Ivan T. Sanderson and Stanton T. Friedman, we'll re-examine this classic case and look at some of the possible explanation for what may have crashed to Earth that day in 1952.

The Flatwoods Monster: Re-Examined

On episode 350 of SOMEWHERE IN THE SKIES, we dig deep into the early files of Project Grudge. Intended to alleviate public anxiety over UFOs and persuade the public that UFOs constituted nothing unusual or extraordinary, Project Grudge sought to explain away UFO sightings. Officials recommended that the project be reduced in scope because the very existence of Air Force interest encouraged people to believe in UFOs. Eventually, the Air Force announced the project's termination in December of 1949. However, it would come to light that it was actually still in operation, albeit covertly, until late 1951. And one of the cases investigated was that of the Fort Monmouth UFO in New Jersey. Buried deep in what many believe was a coverup, the most detailed version would come to light through the words of the man who ran Project Grudge, and eventually, Project Blue Book; Edward J. Ruppelt.
