Veteran journalist John Helmer is the longest continuously serving foreign correspondent in Russia. He has lived and worked in Moscow since 1989. Before that, he served as an advisor in the Whitlam and Carter administrations, the Arab League and the government of Andreas Papandreou — a life, as he puts it, spent working for political losers.
In this wide-ranging conversation with Mike Robinson, Helmer dismantles the Western caricature of Vladimir Putin as a master strategist. Putin never played chess and, contrary to the rhetoric of the likes of russophobes like Chris Donnelly, does not play Go either. He is, instead, a balancer of factions — above all the oligarch lobby created in 1996.
That balancing act, Helmer argues, is now failing under the combined weight of war, recession and inflation ahead of Russian elections. He sets out the escalation options open to the Kremlin, none of which require nuclear weapons, and explains why Sergei Karaganov's calls for tactical nuclear use are a deception operation rather than serious doctrine.
He also discusses how memories of the Yeltsin years act as a constraint on Russian opinion, the failed February 2022 push on Kiev, the collapse of the Istanbul talks, and why Russian think tanks have produced no analysis of American vulnerabilities.

Quiet-spoken Martin Brighton made contact with Brian Gerrish over twenty years ago. An email and telephone call led to a meeting where an exchange of information showed two cities, Sheffield and Plymouth, mired in corruption as a result of the secret networks of Common Purpose.
When Martin's wife was intimidated by the city council, his investigations lifted the lid on millions in European funds that were used fraudulently within the wider Labour administration, which brought about a whitewash of the whole affair by the EU's anti-fraud office, OLAF.
Martin experienced threats and intimidation which strengthened his resolve for justice. His research, which started with corruption, then unearthed the cover-up of child abuse. Ultimately, his investigatory efforts were to result in a South Yorkshire police raid on his home and the theft of substantial evidence which the police should investigate.

Jose Vega returns to UK Column after more than a year, ahead of the US midterms where he again challenges Ritchie Torres in the Bronx.
This time his campaign took a two-pronged approach, to run in the Democratic primary and on the general election ballot. Once again he gathered more than 15,000 signatures to do it and took six percent in the June primary.
The discussion covers the confrontational interventions for which Vega is known — AOC, Mike Pompeo, Kamala Harris and Hakeem Jeffries among his targets — and why he believes that kind of public challenge lends credibility money cannot buy.
He explains his slogan, Declare Independence, as wider than to step away from political parties: it is a call to break out of the narrative that dictates what people think they are permitted to believe. He argues Congress should be replaced wholesale by 25 to 35 year olds, sets out his account of how AIPAC identifies and funds politicians early in their careers, and points to Section 219 of the NDAA, which would deepen US–Israeli military and intelligence integration, as the immediate test of whether ordinary people can force their representatives to act.
