  • S02E03 A day in the life of an English Group Tutor with Charlotte Watson

S02E03 - A day in the life of an English Group Tutor with Charlotte Watson

Welcome to Season 2 of the UK Educators Community Podcast, where you'll get a sneak peek into Educator's diaries, as Syd asks her guests to run through one of their typical days.  On this episode, you'll meet Charlotte Watson.

After many years of teaching in schools, Charlotte is now a private English tutor, running a variety of sessions, both in the classroom and online  through her company Wonderlearn: https://wonderlearn.co.uk/

During the chat, Charlotte talks about the professional development she'll get from the UKED Marakesh Retreat in 2022.  If it sounds of interest to you, please visit: https://ukeducators.com/retreat/

Charlotte and Syd share many core values, and during the chat we get some really useful insights, including:

    • The role of a private tutor is much more fulfilling than working within a traditional school environment.  Charlotte gets to choose how she teaches, and no longer has to "toe the party line", when she doesn't believe in the policies.

  • Marking work can be a time consuming task, but Charlotte would never outsource it, because it helps her understand more about the student, and their progress.

  • Life experience and learning about culture is of massive importance to educators.  It helps us pass our knowledge on, use stories and personal experiences to teach students, which assists in instilling important values. (Note to self: Travel more often 😊)

S02E02 A day in the life of:  A Science Specialist with Michelle Gee

Welcome to Season 2 of the UK Educators Community Podcast, where you'll get a sneak peek into Educator's diaries, as Syd asks her guests to run through one of their typical days.  This episode features Michelle Gee

Michelle teaches Biology to undergraduates at The Open University as well as working as a private tutor. Michelle left her teaching training course after just two months, thinking that she wasn’t cut out to be a teacher. Ten years later she is glad she left her course but that she didn’t give up on teaching.

    Here's Michelle's FB page: https://m.facebook.com/MichelleGeeTuition

There are many key take away points from the conversation, including:

    • If you're training to be a teacher in a traditional environment and feel you're "not right" for the role, consider private tutoring.  The freedom the model provides may reinvigorate your passion for educating

  • Social media marketing works best when there's lots of ENGAGEMENT.  If you reply and spark conversations on your feed, your posts will be seen by more people.

  • Whilst social media is a powerful and FREE way of marketing your tutoring services, leafleting can also still provide a fantastic ROI.  Ensure your designs aren't date specific so they can be used as a long term strategy.  Consider where you're placing them : Libraries, community centres, schools and through letterboxes are great places to start.

S02E01 - A day in the life of: A Franchisee with Miguel de Sousa

Welcome to Season 2 of the UK Educators Community Podcast, where you'll get a sneak peek into Educator's diaries, as Syd asks her guests to run through one of their typical days.  This first episode features Miguel de Sousa

After 15 years in the catering business, Miguel decided to pivot during lockdown in the UK.  His wife was an educator, so he had plenty of insight and support when it came to buying into Tutortoo.  He runs the Worcester franchise; you can find out more here: https://www.tutortoo-worcester.co.uk/

Many educators come into tutoring from a schooling/teaching background, Miguel is quite rare as his past is in business.  This makes for an insightful chat, with several take away points, including:

    • He plans and structures his days in advance, always allowing time for self reflection.

  • He always has a to do list, but never feels guilty if he strays from it to do something enjoyable, as long as everything on there is finished at the end of the day.

  • There are 2 types of people:  "Onions"  stay in a job for MANY years and build up layers of knowledge about their industry and business, whilst "Rockets" move quickly upwards between jobs and industries.  The most solid businesses have both types of people in them, and it's important for the people manager to understand who is who, and what they bring to the business.

#14: Outsourcing Marketing with David Somerfleck.

Welcome to the final episode of The UK Educator's Community Podcast.  Syd has a real treat in store and some fantastic guests booked to appear for Season 2 - Please remember to Follow/Subscribe on your podcast app to be reminded of when it's released.

Following on from last week's episode which had lots of advice about upping your social media game, this week is all about outsourcing your social marketing and website design.

David Somerfleck has been in the digital marketing space since the mid-1990's.  He's a published author, fellow podcast host and the Founder of DMS.Blue: https://dms.blue/

As always, the conversation contains lots of actionably advice.  If you're considering outsourcing your digital marketing and SEO, David suggests the following:

    • You should ensure that anybody you outsource your marketing to is a "good fit" personality wise, and you get a impression that they care about your business and your marketing targets.

  • Upon initial conversations with digital marketers, they should be able to answer all of your questions and give satisfactory answers that make sense to you.

  • Make sure you pore over their testimonials and reviews.  A quality testimonial should have the client's name and  company they are affiliated with.

#13: Social Media Marketing with Alex McCann.

Syd met Alex on Clubhouse and booked him as a guest because he's a perfect fit for this Podcast....he's a social media marketing expert, who's previously worked in the Education sector.

Alex has over 20 years experience of online marketing, and is the Founder of Altrincham HQ.  Find out more about them here: https://altrinchamhq.co.uk/

The chat covers many angles of marketing your Education business, during which there are a good handful of actionable points, including:

    • Engagement is key - to help your posts gain a larger audience, ensure the content is interactive, and people engage.  When they comment, reply to their comments to help stimulate a further conversation.  This will help your post be seen by more of your followers and friends.

  • The default "LIKE" button on Facebook doesn't count as interaction any longer.  To work the algorithms in your favour, aim to have your followers use the other emoji buttons, and engage with your content.

  • Understand why people are using the platforms they're using, and cater your material accordingly to connect with them.  As a general rule, people use Facebook to communicate with friends and family, whereas Instagram is used for escapism and positivity, where as people on Twitter are there for news and topical conversation.

  • Episode #12: Money Mindset with Rae Richards

#12: Money Mindset with Rae Richards - Understanding the Archetypes to charge your value

On this episode, Syd chats with the brilliant Rae Richards.

Rae specialises in coaching women on their money mindset, which helps to grow their businesses.  Her work often starts with identifying her client's archetype.  Whilst Rae's work is generally with women, but her Money Archetypes assessment works the same for all genders.  You can take Rae's "Sacred Money Archetype Quiz", and find out more about her awesome services here: http://bit.ly/UKED_Rae_Richards

This is a really insightful chat, especially if your dominant archetype is a "nurturer", as is the case with many teachers and tutors.

There are many takeaways from this episode, including:

    • When deciding on pricing for your services, look at the market extremes (the lowest & highest prices currently being offered), and decide where you fit in, based on specialty, experience and your USP.  Think of a number, then lift it to the point where it feels "a little uncomfortable" to say, and that's what you charge!

  • Once you know and understand your personality type, you're able to quickly identify which other personality types will be attracted to your business.  Once you know this, you no longer need to market to the people who won't buy your services.

  • To grow more profitable businesses, nurturers need to develop a relationship with money that becomes personal, and reposition their thinking.  For example, money can be used to buy resources for students, which helps you to nurture them.  Earning more money, means you can rest more often... and you need rest to effectively nurture others.

#10: Agency Start-ups with Jemma Smith.

On this episode, Syd catches up with Jemma Smith.

Jemma is the Founder and Director of The Education Hotel.  Jemma has extensive knowledge of the education sector. She has previously managed a residential tuition centre based in the U.K. and tutored families in Dubai, San Francisco, Turkey, Czech Republic, Hawaii and Kenya.

The Education Hotel is a bespoke tutoring service offering premium tuition to children of all ages and nationalities.  Find out more here: https://educationhotel.co.uk/

On this episode, Jemma shared the following nuggets about setting up and running a quality Agency:

    • Identify and focus on your values - This is what sets the standard of the tutors you hire.

  • Get the back end in place before starting your agency - Ensure your system allows for swift invoicing of clients and payments to tutors.

  • The customer journey is of paramount importance.  They need to feel as if they're getting the best service possible, because their reviews and testimonials are what will propel your agency to the next level.
    •
  • Clients of agencies will look for better deals elsewhere.  The way to hang on to clients is to build their loyalty through quality of service.  You need to offer something in way of service that individual tutors don't.

#9: The Power of Speaking with Hassan Wadi – Focusing on your talents for success

Welcome to the UK Educators Community Podcast, with your host, Syd, who's an award winning science communicator, serial entrepreneur and educational consultant.

On this episode, Syd shines the spotlight on Hassan Wadi.

Hassan discovered his talent of public-speaking after attending a course to improve his confidence for work presentations. The course changed his life . Hassan started the Youth Speaking Academy where he now teaches children to become leaders and speakers of the future.

Hassan has a lot of advice to share, including:

    • Test things out to find your talent.  If Michael Jordan had only ever played football, he wouldn't have discovered his talents for Basketball!

  • Focus on your strengths, rather than taking time to build upon your weaknesses, and take time to perfect them.

  • Always utilise your connections to help yourself grow, but ensure you're giving back and the other party is benefitting from the collaboration as well.
    •
  • When you've identified your talents, think about how you're going to use them to help others.

As always, this episode contains  lots of practical advice and actionable tips, including:

    • Understand the personality types on your team, and build around them with complimentary personality types.  You can use this tool to help define personalities: https://www.16personalities.com/free-personality-test

  • Now Syd's team is more established, she often lets members interview and pick  new team members who they'll work best with.  Whilst it's hard to hand over the power initially, it's always worked out well and helps grow collaboration and wellbeing within the team.

  • Don't feel under pressure to grow a team.  You don't need to be entrepreneurial in your approach, and grow a large team.  Do business YOUR way.
