Vladimir Putin created Russia’s National Guard, Rosgvardiya, to stop internal threats before they reached Moscow. But when Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner forces marched toward the capital in June 2023, the system built to protect the Kremlin failed. Putin responded by expanding Rosgvardiya’s weapons and authority, turning Viktor Zolotov’s force into a rival army that Putin now depends on but may no longer be able to disarm.

Russia’s war against Ukraine is making that problem worse. Every battlefield loss weakens the military, while every drone strike, security breach, and domestic failure strengthens the case for more power and funding for Rosgvardiya, the Federal Security Service, and the Interior Ministry. These institutions compete over blame, access, and influence. The forces protecting Putin can gain from the army’s decline because a weaker military leaves them stronger inside Russia.

Rosgvardiya was built to prevent another mutiny, yet its nationwide structure, heavy weapons, and direct access to Putin give it growing leverage over the Kremlin. Putin may still command Russia’s security services, but he has created armed factions whose interests no longer fully align. If the army keeps losing and Putin’s authority weakens, the men guarding his rule may decide who controls Russia next.

Vladimir Putin has left occupied Crimea exposed as Ukrainian strikes tear apart the fuel routes keeping Russia’s forces supplied. Shipping traffic near the peninsula has fallen 55%, while Ukrainian drones have struck at least 159 Russian-linked vessels across the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. Tankers, cargo ships, tugboats, ports, ferries, and the M-14 highway corridor are all under pressure, forcing Moscow to choose between defending Crimea, protecting its supply network, and maintaining air defenses around the Russian capital and Putin’s residences.

Russia’s replacement route now requires a dangerous 640 km (400-mile) detour through occupied Mariupol and Berdyansk because the Kerch Bridge is operating at less than 25% of its former capacity. Burned fuel tankers and military vehicles increasingly mark the road, while concentrated convoys give Ukrainian drones more valuable targets. Disrupted diesel and specialist aviation-fuel deliveries are also weakening mobile air defenses, radar systems, generators, military transport, and aircraft operating from occupied Crimea. Russia can still move some supplies, but it can no longer guarantee when they will arrive or whether the ships and vehicles carrying them will survive.

Vladimir Putin has just thrown Russia into China’s trap while triggering a dangerous cash crisis across Russian banks. His proposed $50 billion Power of Siberia 2 pipeline now threatens to bury Gazprom in more debt while draining the financial system funding his war economy. Beijing is demanding an 80% discount, cutting Moscow’s expected annual gas revenue from about $12.5 billion to only $2.5 billion while leaving Russia responsible for a project costing more than twice Gazprom’s current market value.

Gazprom has already lost 88% of its former European sales, carries more than $73 billion in debt, and has no alternative customer capable of replacing Europe. Russians withdrew $6.5 billion from bank accounts during the first 16 days of July as non-performing loans climbed above 11% and one in six small businesses fell behind on payments. The Bank of Russia is pumping emergency cash into lenders that already owe the central bank roughly $67 billion, increasing the danger of frozen withdrawals, corporate defaults, and a wider Russian bank run.

Beijing receives cheap energy and greater control while Putin leaves Russia with deeper debt, weaker banks, fleeing capital, and no easy escape from Chinese dependence. The same pipeline promoted as Gazprom’s rescue now threatens Russia’s most important energy company, its banking system, and its ability to finance the war against Ukraine. Putin tried to replace Europe with China, but his supposed lifeline has become another trap Moscow cannot easily escape.
