For our February GO Chat, we're reflecting on the transition from face-to-face programs and courses to an online delivery designed for first year students. Summer and Winter Bridge Programs, first year experience courses, and transfer courses all underwent major transitions to welcome UMBC's newest community members online.

We will be joined by Dr. Laila M. Shishineh, Director of First-Year & Transfer Academic Programs in the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) at UMBC. In this role she oversees several campus initiatives including: Academic Transition Courses (FYS, IHU, and TRS), Summer & Winter Bridge Programs, and the Living-Learning Communities.

This month we kick off the new year with a dive into all-things-open, as in Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Pedagogy, and Open Science.

We will be talking with UMBC alum Dr. Karen Cangialosi, a Professor of Biology and Open Education Faculty Fellow at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. Karen facilitates an Open pedagogy faculty learning community, and she is co-leader of KSC Open, a Domain of One’s Own campus project.

According to a 2019 article, average UMBC courses range from 20-49 students. CHEM101 is one of UMBC's largest introductory courses with over 700 students each fall semester. We are joined by the instructors of this course, Dr. Sarah Bass and Dr. Tara Carpenter, to talk about their experience shifting this super-sized course online.

One in four students take some of their courses online, and two-thirds do so at a public institution in the same state where they live (Allen, Seaman, Pouline, & Straut, 2016; Allen & Seaman, 2017). This past spring, those numbers increased dramatically when the world turned upside down. We are joined by Dr. Yvette Mozie-Ross, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management and Planning at UMBC and Beth Jones, Associate Vice Provost for the Division of Professional Studies in the Office of Summer, Winter & Special Programs to discuss The Future of eLearning at UMBC

This month, we are introducing our series! Our first topic will be on badging and micro-credentialing.

Our first guest is Dr. Sherri Braxton, Senior Director of Instructional Technology. In her current role, she is responsible for leading DoIT's strategy for end-user support of instructional technologies including online, hybrid, and traditional “face-to-face” technologies. She also leads UMBC's micro-credentialing initiatives. She served as a task force co-lead for the IMS Global Consortium Open Badge Extensions for Education (OBEE) initiative and continues to serve as a member of IMS Global Open Badges and Comprehensive Learner Record working groups as well as the Academic and Technology Officer and Digital Credentials Innovation Leadership Networks.
