A photography project to document the ‘humanity, and quiet dignity’ of workers in the United States has been launched by the UN’s specialized agency, the International Labour Organization (ILO). 

The aim of the project, which comes as ILO celebrates its 100th birthday, is to look at the working lives of Americans across the country and listen to their hopes and fears for the future. 

For this edition of our flagship podcast show, The Lid is On, Daniel Dickinson joined ILO on the road as it reached the southern US state of Louisiana.

“Passion and story-telling” are two of the key ingredients to become a wine expert according to Michelle Gueydan, a certified sommelier based in New Orleans in the United States. Ms. Gueydan transitioned from politics to event management and then became one of the minority of female sommeliers currently working in the US. 

She spoke to the International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of a photography project to mark the centenary of the establishment of the UN agency. The project called “Dignity at Work: The American Experience” documents the working life of people across the United States. 

Kevin Cassidy, the Director of the ILO’s office for the United States, sat down with her during a tasting event at a wine bar in New Orleans.

A woman chef in New Orleans in the United States has been telling UN News how the restaurant business and cooking over a hot stove, has been a lifelong ‘labor of love’ for her. 

Roseann Rostoker decided she wanted to be a chef at age 14 and ultimately opened her own restaurant nine years ago.  

She spoke to the International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of a photography project to mark the UN agency’s centenary. The project called “Dignity at Work: The American Experience”, documents the working life of people across the United States.
