When your business starts feeling heavier than it used to, it’s easy to assume the answer is a pivot. Maybe the business model isn’t working anymore. Maybe you need a new offer. Maybe you need to rebuild everything from scratch. But what if the business itself isn’t the problem? What if you’re exhausted by the way you’ve been trying to make it work?

Six years after giving my TEDx Talk, Reimagining the Way We Use Social Media, I’m revisiting what I believed about social media in 2020, what I got right, what I couldn’t have predicted, and what I believe about visibility, authenticity, trust, AI, and online community now. Back then, I argued that social media could be used to create three things: community, authentic human connection, and trust.

I still believe that.

But the internet we’re navigating today is very different from the one I was talking about six years ago. Social media has increasingly become interest media. Instead of primarily seeing content from the people we intentionally chose to follow, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube increasingly decide what to show us based on what they believe will hold our attention. And now AI is changing the equation again.

When anyone can generate more content faster, original thought, lived experience, discernment, and trust become even more valuable.

Unapologetically Visible is officially one year old! When I launched this podcast, I was navigating burnout, major changes in my business, and a personal season that would eventually include surgery, recovery, financial uncertainty, and a complete recalibration of how I wanted to show up publicly.

There were plenty of moments when it would have been easier to disappear. But I kept recording.

Podcasting changed my relationship with social media, storytelling and the way I build trust with the people listening. It gave me room to move beyond polished authority content and create the deeper conversations I had been craving, conversations about business, identity, money, fertility, leadership and what it actually takes to remain visible while navigating real life.

I spent years telling myself that I wanted to start a podcast, but I kept overthinking the technology and waiting for the perfect time. Once I stopped treating the podcast like one massive project and created a simple, repeatable process, everything changed.

In this milestone 50th episode of Unapologetically Visible, I’m taking you behind the scenes of my own content creator identity crisis and the humbling experience of being a visibility coach who is having to rediscover her own visibility.

For more than a decade, I knew how to create educational content, communicate authority, position my ideas, and make it clear why someone should hire me. That approach helped me build a respected personal brand, sell my work, and evolve through multiple eras of entrepreneurship. But lately, especially on Instagram, the numbers have been telling me a different truth.

As A.I. changes how content is created and audiences become more skeptical of perfectly packaged expertise, people are craving something different: genuine connection, personality, honesty, curiosity, and access to the human being behind the business.
