Welcome to another episode of Saybrook Insights. My guest today is Claire Osborne, a graduate student in our Integrative Social Work Ph.D. program and a licensed clinical social worker. In this session from our recent President’s Symposium on Integrative Mental Health, we learn about the differences between burnout and secondary trauma. Drs. Brown and Nguyen introduce current research on the phenomena of burnout and secondary trauma. You’ll learn about skills necessary to recognize symptoms of burnout and secondary trauma and explore ways to alleviate those symptoms in themselves and others. Today, we’re featuring a very important panel presentation on the state of integrative mental health in America. Featuring three nationally-known experts – Dr. Kimberly Frazier, President of the American Counseling Association; Dr. C.J. Davis, President and CEO of Burrell Behavioral Health – one of the nation’s largest mental health services providers, and our own Dr. Donald Moss – scholar and expert in integrative mental health, we peel back the layers to understand the complexities of the nation’s mental health crisis with possible solutions for the future. This group of thought leaders sheds important light on what we can and must do to find our way forward! 

My guest today is Saybrook alumna, Katrina Sczesny. She is working on finishing her dissertation research here at Saybrook, which we’ll delve into along with her incredibly passionate efforts centered on the juvenile justice system. My guest today is Saybrook alumnus Dr. Drayton Patterson. I must admit, I am thoroughly excited to meet someone like Drayton - he comes from the sports world and has evolved in his career to be a major supporter of mental health and well-being. Among his credits, he has served as Director of Mental Health and Wellness, Former Board Member, and Ambassador for the Association of Professional Ballplayers of America (APBPA) 2019-Current. He's a Professional Speaker/Psychologist/Best Selling Co-Author, "The Road to Success", Sept. 2016 w/Jack Canfield #3), Unchain Your Brain, January 13, 2017- #1. He is currently listed as one of the "10 Best Psychologists in Chicago" by Thumbtack. Moreover, he is the first Ph.D. Psychologist to sign a player’s contract and manage a professional baseball team in the Mid- America League, and Minor Leagues. He was also a baseball scout for the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau and Texas Rangers (7 years). He was also a Former Sport Psychologist for Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers. Licensed in Illinois/Nationally Certified School Psychologist. This guy seems to do it all and I can't wait to learn more about his story. 

My guest today is our esteemed Department Chair for our Ph.D. in Integrative Social Work, Dr. Trent Nguyen. Dr. Nguyen was a previous guest back when the social work program was in its infancy. Today, we're going to dig in just a bit more about the importance of social work today, the role of the social worker in the continuum of integrative mental health care, and the benefits of a Ph.D. in Social Work. We're also going to explore the importance of social justice in a program like this and why it matters. 

Today's guest is Saybrook alumnus and now faculty member Dr. Annette Anderson-Engler. Annette earned her a Ph.D. in Human Science from Saybrook University in Pasadena, California, an MSW degree in Clinical Social Work from Walla Walla University in College Place, Washington, and an MS in Conflict, Analysis, and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale Florida. As a social work professional, her areas of expertise include but are not limited to Grief, Trauma, Ambiguous Loss, PTSD, and Secondary degree of trauma among military families. Other areas of expertise include Transgenerational Transmissions of Trauma, Identity Displacement, Emotional Transmission, Health Disparities, Social and Cultural Inequities, Transformational Leadership, and Collective Identity among Marginalized Groups. Specialized research interests include Diversity and Inclusion, Oppression, Critical Race Theory, People of Color, and Transformational Narratives through Storytelling, Self and Othering, and the Conspiracy of Silence related to voice and personal meaning.
