Fire, we’re taught from the time we’re little, is dangerous, and most little ones learn to be wary of a soapy bath. This makes God promise that the Messiah will come with refining fire and launderer’s soap, sound very odd. And yet these are some of the most hopeful promises an imperfect person can hear.
