More than a dozen different types of sharks live off the North Carolina coast. UNC scientists have caught and studied them since 1972, creating one of the largest databases of coastal sharks in the nation.

Mice are known to squeak, but Duke researchers have discovered male mice can sing at very high frequencies. The male mice use those ultrasonic sounds to woo female mice, and the song can change depending on the context.

This animation explains nature’s water cleaning system which depends on three cycles working together. They are the watershed cycle, the benthic cycle and the biofilm cycle.

Spencer Rogers, Coastal Construction & Erosion Specialist with North Carolina Sea Grant, talks about how many North Carolina coastal communities & agencies have already taken actions to adapt to future sea level rise. He will also talk about the local adaptation already in place. Mr. Rogers is among the authors of the latest sea-level rise report.

There are still a lot of questions to be answered, but the sea level is rising and communities along the coast are working to understand just what that means and how to prepare for it.

A company in North Carolina has designed an air traffic control system for unmanned aerial vehicles, and is partnering with the Federal Aviation Administration to roll out the program nationwide. PrecisonHawk's chairman of the Board is Red Hat Founder Bob Young. The company is one of only 3 in the country allowed to fly UAVs out of sight.

Pollinators are the motor the plant world depends on. These insects, birds and bats allow plants to reproduce and make the fruits and other foods we enjoy. They are everywhere, but they are also in decline. While crop scientists research exactly what is hurting these animals, the NC Botanical Garden is holding an exhibit called "Saving Our Pollinators" to educate the public.

Dr. Doug Meckes talks about steps being taken to prevent avian flu from spreading to birds in NC. Recently, the NC Department of Agriculture addressed the growing concern about the disease. Right now, the avian flu is spreading from the Northwest to the Midwest, already hitting 20 states. But it could easily move south when wild waterfowl begin migrating in that direction in just a few months.

Before you can know what coastline is lost to hurricanes and sea level rise, you need to know what land is there. Researchers have finished the most complete mapping of the NC coast including oceanside, bayside, and all of the estuaries. Now they can track what happens next.

Mechanical and Aerospace engineering students won a top regional prize and finished 3rd in an international competition by building a quadcopter drone that can deliver a payload and navigate through an obstacle course. Other students won a first place prize by designing robots that can go through an obstacle course and deliver a payload. Kelley McHenry takes us there.
