  • MOTM 578: Are You Worried About Getting Cancelled?

I see people who I know have something important to say hold themselves back for fear of being “cancelled,” whatever that means. Look, I don’t subscribe to “cancel culture” and I don’t think it exists, but it’s robbing people of their ability to think critically and compassionately and it’s preventing too many people from even trying. We’ll never fix the system we’re in by re-writing it. The only solution is to build a new model, one built on growth, equity, and understanding. We build that new system by having the courage to use our voices to contribute to the discussions we feel called to be a part of, regardless of the fear we may be “canceled.”

    Let’s chat.

    • MOTM #204: Science vs. Tradition: Using Biomechanics to Teach Yoga with Jules Mitchell

In this week’s episode, I’m interviewing another rockstar in the yoga and movement space: Jules Mitchell. Jules blends traditional yoga with her wide-ranging knowledge of biomechanics (seriously—she has the masters degree to prove it) to help educate and empower yoga teachers to develop their craft.

Jules leads workshops and courses online and all over the world, as well as hosting her very own 300-hour training course for yoga teachers. She also holds a 6-week online book club studying her own book, Yoga Biometrics: Stretching Redefined, to answer questions and connect like-minded yoga teachers all over the world.

Jules doesn’t let imposter syndrome and fear hold her back. She created the training she wishes she had with the trust that people everywhere are having the same questions, and now her community of biomechanics-focused yoga teacher is bigger than ever.

    • MOTM #202: Serve Your Students, Not the Practice with Cecily Milne

Cecily Milne is doing yoga a little bit differently. After years of practicing ashtanga yoga exclusively, her injuries couldn’t be ignored and the same old standards needed some questioning. Then came Yoga Detour: Cecily’s way to facilitate change in the way movement is understood. In her own words, Cecily is here to help others to be the best at what they do, and to be agents of change.

Yoga purists may not believe that what Cecily is teaching counts as “yoga,” but there’s something more important than serving the practice: serving your students. Every body is different, and your teaching should reflect that. Cecily will teach you how. If you’re a yoga teacher, or a movement coach of any kind, Cecily wants to help you learn not what to teach, but HOW to teach it.

      In This Episode You'll Hear:
      • Who is Cecily?
      • The evolution of Yoga Detour
      • Questioning the same old standards
      • Having the courage to create a yoga certification course
      • Shorter courses with greater impact
      • Getting trapped in the yoga-only mindset
      • Trying new movement forms
      • What is ashtanga?
      • Defining what is and isn’t yoga
      • Using props and tools to help teach
      • Fear-mongering around over stretching
      • Freelancing vs. Entrepreneurship
