In this new episode of Uncharted, 2023 Pioneer scholar and Princeton University student Tatyana sits down with Linda, a 2015 Pioneer scholar whose story defies conventional paths and celebrates the value of staying open to change.
Raised in Chengdu, China, Linda began her academic journey with an interest in diplomacy and linguistics, eventually majoring in international relations at Pomona College. Her Pioneer research in anthropology—focusing on non-verbal communication—planted early seeds of curiosity about human behavior, which would later evolve into design thinking and user research.
After graduating into the uncertainty of the pandemic, Linda found herself unexpectedly accepted into a dual Master’s program at Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art. That decision, made during a global crisis, ultimately launched her into the world of AI for accessibility and gaming at Microsoft UK, where she now works as a design researcher bridging machine learning and real-world user needs.
In this episode, Linda talks candidly about navigating early career uncertainty, how she pursued research opportunities around the world (including studying football culture and political identity in Barcelona), and why she believes grad school isn’t a one-size-fits-all path. She reflects on her years as a mentor and student, and how staying curious—and humble—shaped the way she built a life at the intersection of technology, global affairs, and creativity.
If you're a student wondering how your academic interests might translate into unexpected opportunities—or if you’re simply in need of reassurance that the “right path” isn’t always obvious—this episode offers clarity, comfort, and inspiration.
