The story follows Uncle Wiggily Longears, a rabbit gentleman, who sets off on an evening visit to Mr. Longtail, the mouse gentleman, after a rainy day has cleared up. On his way, he encounters a peculiar scene involving a brass candlestick left in the woods. Uncle Wiggily discovers it belongs to the candlestick maker, part of a whimsical trio including a butcher and baker, who were racing to Mother Goose's house in makeshift tub-boats. Due to the frozen conditions, the candlestick maker had turned his tub into a sled, hoping to win the race. Uncle Wiggily helps the candlestick maker by returning the candlestick, and later, when Uncle Wiggily gets lost in the dark woods, the candlestick maker returns the favor by providing a lighted candle to guide him home.
