BONUS! This is our first installment of a new series on Under the Hood that we're calling the Rosé Roundtable. We're taking the topics we've covered on UTH and bringing them to real women to hear about their personal experiences in womanHood. In this episode we're highlighting what we did, and more likely didn't learn in sex ed during our formative years, and how it shaped our understanding of sex and sexuality for many years after.
We did it! Season One of Under the Hood is complete. We're taking a quick break to celebrate and of course tape new episodes for Season Two. But we wanted to share this look back at Season One that we taped after an year-end dinner. And wine was definitely involved.
This week Patti and Aleks are getting reverently irreverent in a special LIVE recording with Angela Garbes, author of the must read book "Like a Mother: A Feminist Journey Through the Science and Culture of Pregnancy." This conversation touches on everything from pregnancy and placentas to loss and body image, as well as the systems that have been working hard to keep us in the dark.
Dr. Britta Bushnell holds a doctorate in mythological studies and studies the ways we wrap ourselves in stories and myth to understand who we are. She is a storyteller, a listener, and a communication guide, and she applies these skills in her work as an award winning childbirth educator. How we navigate the transition to parenthood says A LOT about how we as a whole honor this rite of passage, how we value the female experience, and what stories and myths we have believed about our own bodies.
G-strings. Guts and gore. A patient cut open on an operating table. All were acceptable in the eyes of Instagram, Facebook, and their millions of users, but images of birth? Not allowed. Too "unpleasant." Katie Vigos was brave enough to ask, WHY? When she recognized this double standard on Instagram, she set out to change the rules. Katie successfully petitioned the powers that be at Instagram and Facebook to STOP censoring photos and videos of birth and allow them to be shown for exactly what they are: realistic portrayals of birth. C-Sections, water births, home births, hospital births, babies born en-caul (so rad, look it up!) You name it, it's been featured on Katie's page.
Patti and Chelsea sit down with Aleks to get a midwife's perspective on some of the topics we've been taking Under the Hood. We're talking "conception control" options, what kinds of contraception we've all tried, and the power of knowing how your body works.
