I am a huge fan of Shannon Stacey and the sports romance sub-genre. When I saw Under the Lights, book #1 of the Boys of Fall series, I couldn't wait to read it. I enjoyed the story and the whole premise of the alumni winning football team coming back to play against the current team in a bid to save the football program. I literally laughed out loud as the alumni jocks faced the aches and pains of age. This was all written so playfully and fun. The story moved a bit slower than I normally like, but all in all I think a pretty strong start to what I think will be a great series.

Chase Sanders, the star running back and all the round golden boy of fall, has fallen on hard times. His business has fallen on hard times thanks to his partner stealing from their company and when times got lean his long time girlfriend packed her things and had her new boyfriend move her stuff out. With his life in turmoil it wasn't the ideal time to get a call from the coach's daughter asking him back to their hometown to help save the football program, but Coach saved his life once and he would do anything for him.

Kelly McDonnell has always been the coach's daughter. She's never really had her own identity in the small town of Stewart Mills. Heck she's all grown up and a police officer now, yet she's had to work twice as hard to get respect from the townspeople. But, she would do anything for her town and they need her more than ever. Tough times have fallen. The failing economy has taken it's toll and people are losing their jobs. Petty crimes are on the rise, as well as domestic disturbances and kids acting out. Losing the football program would only make things worse. The kids need football to give them an outlet and Kelly is organizing a week of events to raise money to save football. Getting as many of the original state champion football team back to help should surely drum up more donations. This just proves that she'll do anything for her town. She had a huge crush on Chase throughout her high school career and was practically invisible to him. Begging him to help and seeing him again is not on her list of things she ever saw herself doing.

It was cute seeing the romance develop between Kelly and Chase. The minute they came eye to eye he was bowled over by the attraction he felt for her.
