And will Arnaud himself prove to be friend...or foe?

If you love reading a well plotted evocative book which transports you ...

If you love reading a well plotted evocative book which transports you in time and place then I highly recommend The Captain's Girl - and its prequel Pengelly's Daughter. It's set in Cornwall 1793. Celia and Charity are wonderful empathetic characters, the hero is dashing (of course!!), I enjoyed the history, the plot fast paced - and I wish I could go sailing on L'Aigrette ...

How did Arabella fall in love? How are they now

Celia knows her duty. Marry the guy they tell her to marry. But trust me, no one would want to marry that guy and when she finds out, well what can she do? What could any woman do at this time when you had to obey your father and then your husband. But she has a streak of wild in her and plans an escape.

First, her cousin Arabella who ran away. We only hear about that. I do not know Arabella, but I was all, I want her story too! How did Arabella fall in love? How are they now? Sometimes those side characters that are not even there really grab your attention. But let us forget about Arabella, I am sure she is happy somewhere. I guess I should read more of the authors books even if she is not in them.

There are more things going on that just Celia's marriage to be. The French revolution is still felt and the English worry about spies (this being a book set at the coast and all). Something is strange about the neighbors and they have their problems. And of course then there is the handsome strangely French captain that she meets.

Conclusion:

Romance, spies, wonderful side characters (not just the that cousin we never even met) and drama.

Review of 'The Captain's Girl' by Nicola Pryce

'The Captain's Girl' is another great historical thriller by Nicola Pryce, following on - and including characters from - her first book, 'Pengelly's Daughter'. The good thing about the book is that it combines very interesting historical and social background, set as it is in 1793 French Revolutionary times, with a really exciting story that you can't put down till you've finished the book. It was well worth reading Nicola Pryce's

website as she elaborates on the inspiration for some of her characters - Sir Edward Pellew being one, an ancestor of mine ! From her book one learns of the real fears the English had of French spies and Revolution crossing the Channel; about sailing ships of those days; about English justice; about lives of the rich and the very poor; about clothing for the gentry.

So, another great book from Nicola Pryce - but start with 'Pengelly's Daughter' if you can, though 'The Captain's Girl' stands perfectly well on its own.

But when his dad passes away and his mother becomes ill, he returns home to help run the family business. Seeing Mallory again brings a flood of memories back, and he begins to wonder what his life would have been like if he hadn't left.

Will the wedding go on or will fate play a hand in Mallory's happily ever after?

Great second chance story

This is a great story about a second chance for love. James proposed to Mallory 10 years ago and she turned him down. She wanted to wait and he didn't so he left town. Now he's back and she's engaged and ready to marry Brent. When Mallory and James see each other, old feelings start to come back. She starts to see how Brent and his family are rich and snobby. She's more down to earth like James. But will she go through with the wedding anyway since all the plans, deposits and everyone is in town for the wedding? This is the first book that I've listened to from Deanna Lynn Sletten but hopefully not the last. I thought Jennifer Groberg did a wonderful narration.

Publisher's Summary:

Mac is a lot of things - smart, sexy, and she can curse like a sailor. But behind her megawatt smile and perfectly pink lips are scars that no one sees. She has all but sworn away from men when an inked-up mystery man walks into her dad's auto shop, jaw clenched and glaring at her. Mac's confidence and cocky comebacks begin to fall short, and it's not long before buried pain and unwanted memories resurface. As life throws her one curveball after another, Mac's composed façade begins to waver, and she finds herself drawn into the arms of a man she can barely stand the sight of. Mostly.

Colton knew Mac was nothing but trouble from the first time he met her, half-naked and cursing at him. A complicated relationship with his boss's daughter is the last thing Colton needs. After all, he came to Saratoga Falls to leave bad decisions behind him. But winter in this small town can be cold and lonely, and Colton finds a certain high-heeled hothead to be more surprising than expected and exactly what he needs.

Nothing but Trouble is a story of passion and tenderness, Christmas trees and snowball fights. It's about the true meaning of family and the sacrifices we make for the people we love.

The Best Kind of Trouble

After reading about Mac in Sam's story I couldn't wait to learn what made her tick. And disappointed I was not, Mac is a no nonsense girly girl who works in a mechanic shop with her dad. She swears like a sailor but is loyal to a fault. Mac and Colton are perfect for each other. There are a few things that would make it seem they should stay far away from one another. But it's those things that actually allow them to help each other heal from pass hurt and self doubt. Things that Colton sees as complications really aren't and emotions & feelings Mac thought she couldn't share are easy to reveal to Colton. Mac's mom coming back after abandoning her father, her brothers, and her set off a chain of events that would forever change her life. Colton to is dealing with changes as well. He's trying to navigate being a good father to Casey an adorable 5 yr old with plenty of sass, his meddlesome ex, mending the relationship with his mother, and fearing that his relationship with his father is over. Apart they are just getting by. Together they will began to heal. But nothings ever perfect and miscommunication between them will put a barrier between them. And while Colton hates outside interference, it's what will save them. Sam and Nick are just as supportive of Mac as she and Nick were of Sam, so now it's Sam and Mac's turn to be that support for Nick as he changes their view on who Bethany is. Her story seems to be one of abuse and protectiveness of her brother. And I'm betting she will be anything but the person they thought her to be. And there is something going on in Nick's family based on the conversation his mom had with Mac at his apartment. So I can't wait for his book to be released.

Baby it's Cold out side, But this book will warm your heart.

This was written to be a stand alone book , but it is so much more enjoyable after you have the backstorie on the charaters from book one. Doing it that way you also get to see how the characters have grown.

I love Mac and the Saratoga Falls Crew.

I loved this series of books!

This series is so wonderful! You actually get to see the characters grow and change. I simply loved it.

Lavender Road Series - I couldn't put them down.

I really loved Helen Carey's Lavender Road Books. I have now read all three of them and felt I was there with them while they struggled to continue on with their lives during the turmoil of WW11. The characters are clearly defined and easy to follow as each one of them carried on despite the war. I was sorry when this book ended and wish there was another to follow.

The ballerina and the farmer...

I enjoyed this audiobook story in which the heroine is a former ballerina, not reduced to teaching at her mothers dance school after a career ending injury. She's recently taken her daughter, left behind a violently abusive ex and divorced him. Struggling to make ends meet, she runs into a gorgeous guy at the animal shelter. He's a local farmer and he's instantly attracted to her. He finally asks her out, but he has secrets and trauma in his past to get over. Together they begin healing each other, but the nasty ex-husband shows back up causing serious problems. I thought the narration was well performed also.

Publisher's Summary:

From USA Today best-selling author J. L. Berg comes a sexy stand-alone about sex, lies, and everything dirty in between.

She wasn't just another job.

She was the story of a lifetime.

Laura Stone was the hottest author of erotic fiction in the country but also the most elusive. Known only by her pen name, there wasn't a person alive who wasn't dying to discover her true identity.

And I, Killian Turner, knew exactly where to find her.

Her real name was Kate O'Malley, and I fully intended on learning every dirty secret she had to exploit for my own gain. After all, isn't that what journalists do?

But I underestimated my prey. I didn't anticipate how her lips could seduce me or the touch of her body against mine would eventually become my ultimate undoing.

I never meant to fall in love. And now I had a choice to make - walk away or stay and risk everything.

Enjoyable Read!!!

I found FRAUD to be an enjoyable read, as I knew it would because it was written by J.L. Berg.

I have been a fan of her books since the very beginning and she has yet to disappoint me. Yes there are some books I enjoy more than others but every one of her books I would recommend to everyone.

Fraud is one of those books that I enjoyed but it wasn't my favorite. I had trouble connecting with Killian for most of the book. This book was going to be a 3.5 stars for me but the second half of the story really grabbed a hold of me and I was able to give it 4 stars. I felt the connection between Killian and Kate a lot more as the story went on. I did think the ended was a little rushed. I thought Kate was a little too forgiving....I wanted her to make Killian work a little harder to gain her trust and forgiveness.

I found the storyline fun and entertaining. I have often wondered about this very subject as I have read books I know that are written under a pen name. Is it feasible to live two separate lives?? Can someone be two different people and not have those lives intersect each other?? Well this book will give you those answers.

I would recommend this book to everyone who likes an entertaining read with not a lot of drama, but enough emotion and angst to keep you gripping the pages.

Great premise, average execution

3-3.5 stars. I was intrigued by the synopsis since it seemed to promise a dilemma of choosing one's career vs finding love and character transformation. It wasn't that I didn't like Kate or Killian, but neither of them particularly captured my interest either. At least not enough to feel invested in the success of their relationship. There were parts that could've really built up the tension and angst and then the execution didn't quite reach that potential. Killian didn't have enough background to really discover and support the kind of person that he is prior to meeting Kate. He just seemed like a regular guy with a "take no prisoners" attitude who was desperate for a good story/expose to sell so it was difficult to pick up on his chemistry with Kate, it seemed forced at times. As for Kate, she was an admirable enough heroine, the sort who was introverted and fearful due past issues, but eventually learned to open up and let it go, but she alone wasn't enough to carry the story on her shoulders.

Secrets

This is book 1 in a new series. In this book you meet Kate and Killian who are your primary characters.

Members Reviews:

I loved it!!!

The author and narrator were new to me with this book. It is a standalone listen that commands me to listen to more by both the author and narrator. I really enjoyed this story of how a detour can change everything. The book has some humor and unexpected twists, no big drama, and some great characters. My review is not a synopsis of the book, but rather my opinion of it. I was provided with this review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily written this review.

Can Megan change all work and no play?

Brandon Barnes, a workaholic businessman stumbles on Megan McKinney unconscious in his yard. Now with a start like that, you know this book is going to be good! These two characters are so likeable, you want begin to root for them even before their first kiss. Both Megan and Brandon come together with their own set of baggage, that we get to know and hate. The question lies though, will they be able to sort through it all to find their happily ever after? Having Dalton and Kaitlyn in this book, as well as Megan's brother Riley gives the story a lot of home and good friends feeling. The relationships between Megan with Riley and Megan with Kaitlyn are key, almost feeling like Kaitlyn is the glue to the whole family with her no nonsense advice and help right from the first day! But my favorite character is Digger..that shoe stealing, hole digging dog is just show stopping and his relationship with Brandon was so heart warming.

Kaleo Griffith needs no praise, the man can read the phone book and make it sound sexy. He gives life to Brandon, letting you feel the compassion and passion as well as having a very good array of character voices for the rest of the cast. Very enjoyable listen.

Really good story- very enjoyable

Any additional comments?

I don't want this short little series to be over. Don't they have a long lost brother? Maybe? Heck, I'll even take a cousin. Or, Riley.

This is the second book by Lindsey Brookes that I have listened to and it was another fun, entertaining and very enjoyable listen. Just as with the first book in the series this one is also well written, flows smoothly, has an engaging storyline, is full of humor, a little steamy romance and great characters all without too much angst and drama.

Technically you could listen to this book as a standalone but I would start with the first book in the series just for the pure enjoyment of it.

Once again the story has a great cast of characters. Both old and new. Even though Brandon has been branded " The Ogre of Lone Tree" he is an immediately likable character. That hard outer shell of his had cracks in it at the end of the first book.

Very good.

Very good but not necessary. Author could have added this ending to the end of Eversea. This was unnecessary and long. Still loved this couple. Plus no one does better southern narration better than Jorgeana Marie. I could listen to her all day.
