Mapping Doctors

Underdoctoring: location, location, location

Listen Later

Mapping Doctors is an NIHR-funded multi-disciplinary research project at Lancaster University. We are exploring and mapping underdoctored areas, in particular the impact of medical training pathways on NHS workforce distribution and health inequalities.

In this episode Euan Lawson and Dr Liz Brewster talk about geography with Dr Cliff Shelton. Where do doctors train? How much control do they get over this and what are the potential impacts on underdoctoring? We consider the evidence around placing medical schools in areas where there is underdoctoring and how training in smaller hospitals might differ.

Note: This study is funded by the NIHR but the views expressed are those of the members of the team and are not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care.
