We walk among lesser Gods. We also walk with the God of gods, Yahweh. God created "elohims" like Himself. "Elohim" often becomes misunderstood. It means "a disembodied spirit whose home is the spiritual world." God is an "elohim" (Gen. 1:1). Demons get called "elohim" (Deut. 32:17). Samuel of the Bible got called "elohim" (1 Sam. 28:13). Of all the books in the OT, Isaiah is perhaps the richest. Its literary grandeur is unequaled. Its scope is unparalleled. The breadth of its view of God is unmatched. In so many ways it is a book of superlatives. Thus it is no wonder that Isaiah is the most quoted prophet in the NT, and along with Psalms and Deuteronomy, one of the most frequently cited of all OT books. Study of it is an opportunity for unending inspiration and challenge.

Were the book of Isaiah merely a monument to Hebrew religion, it would be a most impressive monument indeed. In fact, it comes to us as a word from God, a revelation of the inevitable conflict between divine glory and human pride, of the self-destruction which that pride must bring, and of the grace of God in restoring that destroyed humanity to himself. To read the book with the open eyes of the spirit is to see oneself, at times all too clearly, but also to see a God whose holiness is made irresistible by his love.

The first clue is Mark 1:1 which tells us about the good news of the Kingdom of God. Jesus is the Messiah who leads Israel through the red sea, into the wilderness, through the Jordon River into Canaan (Ex. 32:20). A second clue appears in 1:9–10 when Jesus was baptized and the Spirit descended on him like a dove. There also is a clear connection between Jesus and the prophecies of Isaiah 64:1. The verb “to tear open” is a plea for God to forgive the sins of the people of Judah, secure its prosperity and establish justice in the world.

Like Elijah (1 Kings 17:2-3), John the Baptist is identified with the wilderness---the vast barren badlands of Judah, seared by wind and heat. The wilderness represents a place of repentance and a place of God's grace in Israel's history. God delivered Israel from the slavery of Egypt by taking them into the wilderness---first to the wilderness of Sinai (Exod. 15:22ff), and thereafter in a symbolic wilderness of hope proclaimed by the prophets (Jer. 2:2-3; Hos. 2:14ff). In the wilderness Israel failed over and over again and it, along with failure after failure throughout Israel's dynasty, eventually led to exile. John the Baptist begins his ministry in the wilderness because this is where Yawheh is going to return and reverse all the failures of Israel in Exile. And God does return in Jesus Christ, the beginning of good news that the return from exile has begun (Mk. 1:1).
