Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, behavioural experiments are designed to test thoughts:
Behavioural experiments (BEs) are amongst the most powerful methods for bringing about change in cognitive therapy:
Behavioural experiments are planned activities to test out thoughts in action in everyday situations. They can help you to test the validity of negative thoughts, put new thoughts into action and help towards working on your goals.
Behavioural experiments are information gathering exercises to test the validity of beliefs. In essence, once a belief is clearly specified the evidence supporting it can be explored experimentally. Tests are specified which can provide new information - this information may serve to confirm or disprove beliefs, or offer support in favour of one hypothesis over another:
• test the validity of the patients’ existing beliefs about themselves, others,
and the world
• construct and/or test new, more adaptive beliefs
• contribute to the development and verification of the cognitive formulation
