Understanding Scripture with Dr. J

Jesus was on a quest, not simply for believers, but He was on a quest for Discipleship. There is a difference between giving mental assent which is called Salvation, and truly being convert - being changed to follow Jesus Christ. In this episode, we will explore James' theology on faith and works which is need to build discipleship. 

In this portion of scripture, James addresses the idea of believers misjudging the motives of other people. The tendency most people have is to cast judgment on a person for what they say or do, or because of some external factor or outward appearance. In this section, James has a word for believers, as he addresses the problem of prejudice and making superficial judgements. He places emphasis on right speaking and right acting. 

James shows a progression of practically living out Christianity. In this episode, you will explore this progression which is the center of James' theology and should be our center. You will learn the difference between just hearing God's word and doing God's word. 

Temptations and trials are two different things. Temptations come to may you fail and trials are to strengthen you. The way you get out of temptations is to learn from them. The way you get out of trials is through perseverance. In this session, Dr J looks at the difference between the two.

When you engage with your Bible, there are many things taking place in and around the text that you might not be aware. Historical context is a hidden reality with the text you are reading. Although the Bible is not a history book, it does contain an interaction with historical events that are taking place. History provides context and context provides meaning.
