Praise and worship are two distinct acts. Praise looks back at what God has done, while worship sets everything aside to focus entirely on who God is. To truly worship God, we must truly know God, because you can only love someone as much as you know them. Familiarity with church and with God can quietly erode our sense of awe, leaving us going through the motions without genuine submission. Like the sinful woman who washed Jesus' feet with her tears, real worship requires letting go of pride and dignity. God is holy in a way that should produce reverence, not casualness. Because of what Jesus did at Calvary, we have access to a holy God, and that access is worth far more than we typically treat it. He deserves our full, undignified, wholehearted worship.
