(Un)doing Geography

In this week's episode of (Un)doing Geography, I will be joined by fellow Goldsmiths Student Angela Billings who undertook a research placement at Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford which examined the public's responses to the removal of human remains from open display in the summer of 2020. In today's show we discuss the research project, the emotional responses to this process and Angela's own journey thinking with and about decolonisation, systems of power and the pluriverse. I would like to thank the Pitt Rivers Museum for their contribution to this week's episode. Their sector leading approach to addressing the difficult histories of the museum's colonial legacy embrace hope, reconciliation and redress; bringing fresh, new voices into the conversation.

In today's show we discuss the research project, Angela, is carrying out at the Pitt Rivers Museum in response to the removal of 120 objects from their display including tsantsa or shrunken heads in June 2020. We also discuss systems of power, living in a pluriverse and challenging dominant narratives and ideologies. In this week's episode of (Un)doing Geography, I sit down with Alice, a fellow human geographer, an officer for a climate-led governance organisation with a special interest in climate action and cities. Alice also volunteers for the residents-led association, Peckham Vision, which seeks to mobilise community action against widespread gentrification. In today's show we speak about what we learnt about climate change at school or university, what is missing and how far the climate change debate has moved on since then. We also look at the importance of strong leadership and governance within cities. Alice's book recommendation for fellow geographers is 'Doughnut Economics' by Kate Raworth. The first episode of (Un)doing Geography looks at what we mean by the term Geography and how we can adopt a more inclusive approach of doing geography by learning from the Ancient Greeks. I revisit the first Geography textbook on my university reading list, Introducing Human Geographies, 3rd Edition (2013) by Paul Cloke, Philip Crang and Mark Goodwin. I look at the Imperial Foundation - Map of the World Showing the Extent of the British Empire and the problematic framings of map symbolism and domination. Finally we look at one of the founding fathers of the discipline, Halford Mackinder, and his use of excessive violence during his expedition to Mount Kenya. If we consider our subject, as those involved with Earth writing as the Ancient Greeks suggest, it can be done by anyone, at any place and at any time.
