The Civil War prison was only active for 53 weeks. But in that time nearly 3,000 men died. During it's second, week a train wreck killed prisoners on the way to the new prison. It got worst.

In 1918 an explosion ripped through a munitions plant just outside of Syracuse. The explosion broke windows miles away, killed over 50 people, and because it was the height of WWI, many thought it was an act of sabotage committed by the Germans.
