Unexpected Bad News

We would like your thoughts. There may not be a 'right' answer for the best way to deliver unexpected bad news, but there are certainly many wrong ways. No one wants to hear bad news from their physician. Yet unfortunately sometimes that is what has to be provided. The findings indicate the patient is at risk or has a worrisome diagnosis.
Dr T and I work with less experienced physicians and providers to assist their learning for these difficult and uncomfortable conversations. We encourage the learners to practice with their own family and friends to become more proficient while also accepting constructive criticism.
This information must be provided in caring and compassionate manner. When cure is not possible, care is all the more important. Compassionate care is important for all patients and particular attention needs to be provided in difficult situations. It is traumatic for patients and familes to hear this type of information. Physicians can build strong relationships with their patients and it can be very distrubing for them to have to provide this type of upsetting news. We all need to be sensitive to each others feelings and make our best effort to communicate honestly and in a caring manner.
