In this time of physical isolation, it's easy to feel emotionally distant and even to feel distant from God. John the baptizer tells us to prepare, to confess and repent, for the kingdom is coming. We remember that we wait together, and love still reigns. We know that one is coming, has come, and will continue to come, who will bring comfort.

Advent is a season of waiting. In the Gospel text for today, we see things are not looking good, but that hope is there. The first candle of advent signifies this hope, the first component in waiting. While we are waiting, we are urged to be awake, to get and be prepared, for the kingdom of God is coming.
