Kruger National Park is South Africa's largest and most famous game reserve, located in the northeastern corner of the country across the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, stretching along the borders of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Covering roughly 19,623 square kilometers (7,576 square miles), it protects an immense variety of African wildlife, including the Big Five.
Location and Geography
Provinces: Limpopo and Mpumalanga in northeast South Africa.
Boundaries: Bounded by the Crocodile River in the south, the Limpopo River and Zimbabwe border in the north, and Mozambique to the east.
Dimensions: Extends about 360 km (220 mi) north to south and 65 km (40 mi) east to west, with administrative headquarters in Skukuza.
History
Early Human Presence: Home to over 300 archaeological and Stone Age sites, including San rock art and ancient ruins like Masorini and Thulamela, dating back hundreds of years.
Establishment (1898): Originally proclaimed as the Sabie Game Reserve on March 26, 1898, by the Transvaal Republic president Paul Kruger to stop excessive hunting in the Lowveld.
First Warden (1902): Major James Stevenson-Hamilton was appointed as the first game warden, working hard to clear out illegal hunting and restore depleted animal populations.
National Park Proclamation (1926): The Sabie and Shingwedzi game reserves were merged under the new National Parks Act and officially named Kruger National Park on May 31, 1926.
Opening to Public (1927): The park welcomed its first paying leisure visitors, eventually growing into a world-class conservation and safari destination.

According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) by Statistics South Africa, the 60.9% figure referenced represents the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24, rather than an empowerment rate. This means 60.9% of young people actively participating in the labor force in this age group are unable to secure jobs.
The employment absorption rate for young South Africans remains critically low, leaving a large portion of the demographic stuck outside of employment, education, or training (NEET). Addressing this requires systemic economic interventions and targeted job creation initiatives.
