The purpose of this exclusive interview is to delve into the experiences, insights, and reflections of Anne Willem Bijleveld, Ekber Menemencioğlu, and Claude Marshall, all seasoned veterans of the UNHCR. It seeks to capture their personal journeys within the organization, from their motivations for joining to their evolving roles amid global refugee crises.

We explore their on-the-ground experiences, including handling dangerous situations such as the conflict in the former Yugoslavia and managing refugee camps during emergencies. The interview also examines the evolution of UNHCR’s operations, highlighting bureaucratic challenges, technological advances, and the shift towards cash-based aid.

Each interviewee brings a unique perspective: Anne Willem Bijleveld reflects on crises such as Biafra and post-Cold War instability; Ekber Menemencioğlu discusses his roles in the Vietnamese "boat people" crisis and Afghan refugee situations; and Claude Marshall, born a refugee in the United States as a Jewish child fleeing from Nazi Germany, shares his efforts in integrating sports into refugee rehabilitation.
