  • Ep 24: Investigating & Prosecuting Sensitive Cases

When it comes to the Fort Wayne Police Department's CAPS Division (Crimes Against Persons) it often doesn't get the recognition it deserves. However, the public deserves to know what is exactly going on within the walls of their own  communities.

So many times we get caught up in our own lives that we often forget there are victims of rape, child abuse, neglect, battery, and stalking all around us and there are numerous victims of these heinous crimes right here in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have to hold space for these people and understand that these cases are hard.  They are hard on the victim. They are hard on the officers who have to investigate them and they are hard on medical professionals.

Today we understand these crimes and how challenging they are to investigate and prosecute.

  • Ep 23: Preventing Suicide

This is the age old family secret that no one is ever going to tell, but it needs to be told. People and families are suffering all across the country from thoughts of suicide. And Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department do not want to go to another case of someone dying by suicide. That is why they have joined forces with Alice Jordan-Miles (260- 481- 4184) to tackle suicide prevention.

Jordan-Miles has dedicated her life to the bold, aspirational goal of zero suicides among Hoosiers. She is the Director of the Behavioral Health and Family Studies Institute at Purdue University Fort Wayne. She is also the Director of Indiana's Suicide Prevention Coalition. She currently has 22 coalitions working across the state to prevent suicides at the grassroots level.

Jordan-Miles also leads the Indiana's "Lost Team" network. These are groups of individuals that will assist families after they have been touched by suicides.

  • Ep 22: Law Enforcement and Drones

The Air Support Unit (ASU) is a new team within the Fort Wayne Police Department. This is the team that is deployed the most and rightfully so as this cutting-edge technology not only saves the department time, but it also helps save lives. The drones can map crime scenes and fatal crash scenes, assist in finding missing persons, provide overwatch for hostage and barricaded subjects in addition to pre-raid surveillance.

All of the Department's drone operators are top notch, including Patrol Officer Matt Rowland. He is addressing top concerns related to the usage of drones by law enforcement:

    How do drones help?

    Are the drones watching you?

    Who pays for the drones?

If you would like to schedule the Air Support Unit at an event or activity, please click on the link  to submit your request. Please keep in mind that requests for personnel and equipment must be done at least four (4) weeks ahead for scheduling purposes.

  • Ep 17: Impaired Driving

Throughout the country 28 people die every day from impaired driving. When you hear the words "impaired driving" most people typically think drunk driving, but the definition of impaired driving can mean multiple things. For example, it can mean driving under the influence of prescription drugs. Or it can mean driving under the influence of illicit drugs. Because the definition of impaired driving has changed significantly over time, impaired driving has created its own set of challenges for law enforcement.

Whether it’s called drunk driving, driving under the influence, impaired driving or operating under the influence it is a serious problem, especially around the holidays, and it demands continued conversation and attention.

  • Ep 15: Replacing Police with Social Workers

Activists, city leaders, state officials and even the President of the United States have been making calls to defund the police. This idea of defunding the police gained momentum after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota and all yes were on Minneapolis earlier this month as the future of the Minneapolis Police Department was put on the ballot.

The city voted on an amendment that would have replaced the Minneapolis Police Department with a "Public Safety Office." The idea was to take a portion of public safety dollars from the police department and invest those dollars in "alternatives" to handling domestic violence calls and mental health calls around the community.  Ultimately, the amendment was voted down, meaning the Minneapolis Police Department is able to remain as it has always been. However, the topic of defunding the police has not gone away.
