One of only three countries where wild poliovirus remains endemic, Afghanistan has taken a major step toward eradication, thanks in part to the efforts of the health volunteers who go door to door every day to ensure every child is vaccinated.

For one UNICEF staff member assessing the damage of Typhoon Haiyan, restoring access to water for families in Tacloban was a more immediate priority.

Once destined to drop out of school to herd animals, girls in Somalia's rural and pastoral settings are now receiving a basic education.

“UNICEF is working on the ground, doing its best 24/7,” said Ms. Farrow. “But, really, the needs here are so great, they can’t do it alone.”
