This week's labor history: Joe McCartin explores efforts by African-American workers to fight discrimination, from A. Philip Randolph’s 1941 push to end discrimination in war industries to a 1943 strike by Detroit auto workers who were attacked by the KKK.

PLUS: Elise Bryant on the 1943 strike by African-American tobacco workers against R.J. Reynolds, the jazz opera it inspired, and the connection between labor history and labor arts, and sociologist Chris Rhomberg discusses the origins of the 1995 Detroit newspaper strike. Bryant and Rhomberg speak with LHT’s Patrick Dixon.

And Saul Schniderman on Mother Jones’ rally in Philadelphia to focus public attention on children mutilated in the state's textile mills.

He founded the American Railway Union on June 13, 1893, and on June 16, 1918, Debs spoke out on the relationship between capitalism and war; 10 days later he was arrested and eventually sentenced to 10 years in jail.
