The Spanish peso, also known as the Piece of Eight, was a silver coin used in Spain and its colonies during the colonial period. This currency became the legal tender in the thirteen British colonies in North America after the American Revolution. The Spanish peso became the basis of the monetary system of the United States and was the most commonly used currency in international trade until the late 19th century. In 1785, the United States Congress adopted the dollar as the official monetary unit of the country and established its value referenced to the value of the Spanish peso and defined as the "Spanish dollar". The first US dollar was minted in 1792 and had a value of approximately one-eighth of a Spanish peso or a Spanish dollar of the time. The coin was designed by engraver Robert Scot and featured an image of the goddess Liberty on the obverse and a bald eagle on the reverse. Throughout the history of the United States, the design of the dollar has changed several times and many different varieties of the currency have been minted. However, the legacy of the Spanish peso as the currency that laid the foundation for the US monetary system remains significant, and its influence can be seen in the current currency.
