UNH heads down to the deep South in the United States to take a look at at FRAILTY (2001), the psychological / supernatural thriller directed by and starring Bill Paxton, and also starring Matthew McConnaughey and Powers Boothe. Becky, Mike, Talicia, LunaMyst and Lucard talk in-depth about Gothic and Southern Gothic fiction, religion and the history in the South. Our very own Horror Librarian Talicia tells us about Child of God, a Southern Gothic tale by Cormac McCarthy about Lester Ballard–a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape–haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail. Oh the suffering…! Back in episode 12 we took a detailed look at Hellraiser. But this time around Mark, Matt and Mike were the only ones willing to delve even deeper into the utter dark depths of hell. In this episode, we will be covering the remaining five films and the comic books. Our Horror Librarian Talicia Tarver joins the suffering to discuss Clive Barker’s Hellbound Heart and The Scarlet Gospels. Kieran calls in to leave give his two cents on the Hellraiser franchise and much more as we wrap up the Hellraiser series. Will we make it out of hell alive… you’ll have to listen to find out!

Here at UNH, even though the team don’t got time to bleed, we’re obsessed with talking about film; you’d be right in saying that it makes our day. So much, in fact, that we’ve decided our discussion can’t be contained with the boundaries of horror… welcome, friends, to the ACTION ZONE. In the first episode of this new series, in which we’ll be tackling action favourites, old and new, as well the comedic, the unknown and the bizarre, Mark and Mike sit down to discuss new offering Captain America: Civil War. Female hysteria: it ain’t no passing craze… It means no worries, for the rest of men’s days… A phallic, problem-free philosophy… Female hysteriaaaaaaa.

Apologies for the above appalling attempt to lighten this week’s subject matter. In this episode UNH will be talking about THE ENTITY (1981), Sidney J Furie’s wonderful study in female neurosis, gender politics, and the science vs supernatural debate. In addition to discussing female hysteria as a medical diagnosis throughout history, and female neurosis in the horror film more broadly, we’ll also be touching on the book by Frank De Felitta that inspired this adaptation, recounting the alleged true haunting of Doris Bithers by an unseen, distinctly male entity in and around 1974.
