Why do we celebrate anniversaries, anyway? In our personal experience, it’s a way to say “thank you” or “we made it” or “where has the time gone?” It’s an opportunity to express appreciation. For organizations it is this as well, and it is also an opportunity to tell stories, to share about who we are and to see the connections between what we’ve done, experienced and attempted and what we are working on today. We curate and shape our story every time we tell it.

As busy United Methodist Women members working diligently toward justice for women, children and youth, we can often feel that we are running a race of sorts. Our lives become a daily balance of trying to fit all we are called to do into a few precious daytime hours. We go from task to task and meeting to meeting. We may even feel like we’re in a relay race—and that it would be a relief to pass the baton on to another runner from time to time.

Contributing to the Legacy Fund Endowment Campaign is a lasting way to leave a legacy.

For the most part, West Texas is empty. To be sure, the area is beautiful, with its mile-high mountains set amid the Chihuahua Desert. Small towns dot the region, full of history, but lacking the population that would bring many Walmarts and other symbols of advanced civilization. The Alpine Community Center in Alpine, Texas, provides quality child care for a community in need.

The new year of 2019, as all years do, will bring change and challenge and blessings. As we move ahead with a new response publication schedule and enhancements to how we at the United Methodist Women’s national office support members, we are also anticipating where the Holy Spirit may lead The United Methodist Church.
