What does it mean to consciously accelerate our own spiritual evolution?

Following Episode 7’s exploration of Adepts, Mahatmas, Bodhisattvas and Nirmanakayas, we turn from the ideal to the path itself. We explore the Theosophical teachings on chelaship, probation and initiation—and why the path toward adeptship is fundamentally one of self-mastery.

What is a chela? What role does a Guru or Mahatma actually play? Why can’t a teacher simply remove the disciple’s karma or make someone enlightened? And why do the Theosophical writings warn that deliberately accelerating our development also brings our hidden tendencies, weaknesses and attachments more rapidly to the surface?

We also examine pledges and vows, freedom and responsibility within the guru-disciple relationship, initiation as a transformation of consciousness, and the development of ethical qualities such as patience, compassion, truthfulness and nonviolence as genuine spiritual powers.

Ultimately, the path begins not with occult phenomena or extraordinary abilities, but with self-knowledge, discipline, altruism and service—beginning exactly where we are.

What might a human being ultimately become?

In this episode, we explore the Theosophical idea of human perfectibility and the beings described as Adepts, Mahatmas, Masters, Bodhisattvas, and Nirmanakayas.

Beginning with the idea that evolution becomes increasingly self-directed once self-consciousness develops, we examine the possibility that individuals can advance beyond the ordinary human stage through sustained effort, inner development, and the gradual mastery of consciousness.

We discuss the meaning of Adeptship and Mahatmaship, the distinction between spiritual development and psychic powers, the Brotherhood of Adepts and its hierarchy of teachers, and the relationship between Masters and disciples.

The conversation then turns to the Bodhisattva and Nirmanakaya ideals—the choice to renounce personal liberation in order to remain connected with humanity and continue helping others.

Rather than treating the Mahatma as a supernatural being or object of worship, Theosophy presents the Adept as an indication of what human beings may eventually become.

This discussion leads directly into Episode 8, where we explore the Path itself: discipleship, probation, initiation, and the disciplines of self-mastery.

What happens after death?

In this episode, we explore the Theosophical teachings on death, the afterlife, and the process of reincarnation. Building on our previous discussions of karma and the seven principles of the human being, we follow the cycle from physical death through Kama-Loka and Devachan, and eventually toward rebirth.

We discuss what survives death, what happens to the personality, the distinction between the higher individuality and the lower psychic nature, and the role of the “reincarnating ego.” We also explore the life review, the “second death,” the dissolution of the Kama-rupa, the spiritual rest and assimilation of Devachan, and the karmic tendencies that help shape a new incarnation.

Along the way, we consider ghosts and mediumistic phenomena, premature death and suicide, and the larger evolutionary purpose behind the cycle of birth and death.

From the Theosophical perspective, death is not the opposite of life. Life continues, while birth and death mark changing phases in a much longer evolution of consciousness.

What is a human being?

In this episode, we explore the idea that a human being is more than just a physical body. 

Starting with familiar concepts of body, soul, and spirit, we gradually examine the sevenfold constitution presented in Theosophy: Spirit, spiritual soul, mind, desire, life-energy, the astral body, and the physical body. We also distinguish between a principle and a vehicle, and consider how consciousness operates through different levels of our nature.

Along the way, we discuss the astral body, prana or life-energy, higher and lower mind, states of consciousness, and the relationship between consciousness and substance. We touch on near-death and out-of-body experiences, and our potential for direct experience of non-bodily consciousness.

At the heart of the episode is the ancient injunction: Know thyself—and the question of why understanding our own nature matters for both everyday life and spiritual development.

In this episode, we explore karma and reincarnation from a Theosophical point of view.

Beginning with common modern assumptions about these ideas, we examine how Theosophy understands karma as a universal law of action, balance, and responsibility, and reincarnation as part of a larger evolutionary process. We discuss justice, fairness, suffering, the continuity of the reincarnating ego, and the question of what these teachings mean for daily life.

Rather than asking listeners simply to believe in karma and reincarnation, this episode approaches them as ideas to be explored and tested through reflection, experience, and self-study.

What is practical Theosophy?

In this episode, we explore how Theosophical ideas move from theory into lived experience. Beginning with the philosophical foundations of Theosophy, we examine its view of reality, knowledge, and evolution, and how these inform a path of inner development.

We discuss the role of ethics, study, and meditation, along with key ideas such as altruism, self-directed effort, and the gradual unfolding of consciousness. The episode also introduces the concepts of adepts, initiation, and the broader path of spiritual transformation.

Rather than presenting a fixed system of practices, Theosophy is approached as a methodology—one that must be explored and developed through individual effort, guided by insight, reflection, and experience.

In this episode, we take a broad, “bird’s-eye view” of some of the central ideas in Theosophy, moving from the highest metaphysical principles down to the structure of human life and experience.
