It’s hard to get around the familiarity we all have with Psalm 23 and view it in a new light, but that the first lines of the Psalm, “…I shall not want…” reveal a similarity to love songs that talk about how the sun and the moon rise and set and the lover may be oblivious to these things if his/her lover is (or is not) around. The Psalm also has a feeling of”no matter what happens, as long as you’re with me, everything is ok.”

Pslam 25 cries out to God with the tenor of a lover who fails to know how to show his/her love to the Beloved. David cries, "make me to know Your ways, O Lord" with the same feeling as someone who feels inadequate to their love. So often, when we don't know how to show our love, we show it in inappropriate or at least non-specific terms which result in actually hurting the object of our love. That is the same thing with God - we cry out "How do we show our love to You?" and He responds, "Love my Church, Love your Neighbors".

As we enter into Lent, we enter into it considering our own mortality that comes through our fall into sin, and how that fall has made us utterly afraid of death - but needlessly because we have a Savior who took death for us.
