Everything you do has an impact. It could be an impact on your employees, your peers, your boss. It could be an impact on your spouse, your kids, your friends, or neighbors. No matter what you do, you create an impact.

The question is, what kind of impact do you want to make?

Your brain loves to play tricks on you. And one of the ways it does this is by throwing all sorts of random thoughts at you. Bacon and eggs while you’re in a meeting, cats playing baseball while you’re at lunch with a colleague, wildfires and hurricanes coming together while you’re settling into bed.
Your brain doesn’t care what they are. And the more fantastic, outlandish, or terrifying, the better as far as it is concerned, because it is utterly random and completely made up.
Your brain is amazing. It can produce inspirational ideas for you to move forward when faced with a challenge and it can create crushing scenarios that keep you frozen in time and space.

All too often we hear about setting goals to achieve and accomplish more at work and in life. And goals are good. They help us create a future vision. They help us keep score along the way. They give us something to look forward to.

But are we going about setting goals the right way? Or even setting the right goals?

Trust is built in the small moments.
As leaders, we find ourselves in pivotal situations every single day. We may not realize them at the time as being pivotal, but later in the day or the next, we understand just how important they were.
And if we’re smart (or at least aware) we may think, “Did I do the right thing at the time?”
Now we won’t always be able to make the right call or do the right thing in the moment, but we can always choose whether we make ourselves available to the other person or not.
Let me explain.

Your good friend comes to you and has a real problem. They say they need your advice. You get all excited because you’re about to drop some serious wisdom on your good friend.
You feel smart, valued, wanted, and dare I say, even superior?
So your good friend begins to tell you of their problem and you, being the wonderful active listener that you are, nod your head, sprinkle in those words that let them know (or at least think) you are listening – uh huh, yeah, right, I hear you, go on.
And you are getting so excited because you have the perfect advice already. You just know you’re going to make this person so happy they asked you for your sage wisdom, because you are about to fix everything for them.
But wait! Hold up!

It’s interesting how we associate time with wisdom. The old sage, the elder statesman, the ancient guru. For the most part that can be a fairly accurate correlation…but only if we go about living the same life we have over and over again, year after year.
But it doesn't have to be that way. You can decide to jump start, accelerate, and expand your knowledge and wisdom however you like.

We all have verbal crutches. You know, those words we use to fill the empty space in conversation. Usually they come when we don't know what to say, but sometimes...

Most of the time we are able to maintain good self-control over what we decide to do in certain situations. Other times we are swayed by various forces, and those forces can be internal or external.
For instance, you’re driving along, enjoying your favorite song, you’re almost home, and then just as you are getting ready to exit the highway, someone cuts you off. You yell and shake your fist and you think, “What an asshole!” You probably even scream it. What just happened? You’ve just been hijacked.
