UNPACK FROM THE INSIDE OUT | Don’t get too attached to all the things “social media” psychologists say about childhood experiences that make you feel validated. Validation without a solution can increase our anxiety.

Making us feel validated through shared experiences is a great way to catch our attention but true change in our life happens when we focus on the issues that are most impactful to us in our life in this moment. Even if a psychologist were given all the data about you and your childhood, they couldn’t predict which things would impact you in a negative way. It’s easy to get emotionally attached to our childhood experiences and the outcomes that people say are probable. Yes, it helps us feel validated but if we don’t focus on the solution, this information isn’t helpful and can actually make us even more anxious. The best way to unpack ourselves is by focusing on the “thing” that is causing the most challenges and negativity in our minds and lives, not focusing on the experiences we had as a child. Making us feel validated through shared experiences is a great way to catch our attention but that doesn’t help us solve the issues in our life.
