We've all done it.
We have a dream, an idea, or a goal we're excited about, and the first thing we do is ask someone else what they think.
The problem?
Not everyone is qualified to give you advice.
If someone has completely different goals than you, why would you expect them to understand yours?
In this episode we'll talk about:
Your goals aren't their goals.
Someone who loves stability may never understand why you want to start a business.
Someone who hates social media probably isn't the person to ask about growing on TikTok.
Someone who has never taken a risk may genuinely think they're protecting you when they tell you not to do something.
They're giving advice based on their life, not yours.
A personal example
I had someone tell me that talking videos don't work on TikTok because people have short attention spans.
For a second, I questioned myself.
Then I stopped and thought...
"I like watching talking videos."
If I do, chances are millions of other people do too.
The difference?
She and I use TikTok for completely different reasons.
Her advice wasn't wrong.
It just wasn't right for my goals.
Consider the source.
Before you take someone's advice, ask yourself:
- Do they have the life I want?
- Have they actually done what I'm trying to do?
- Are they speaking from experience or opinion?
- Are they encouraging me from knowledge or from fear?
Not all advice deserves equal weight.
Sometimes good people give bad advice.
This isn't about judging people.
Your family loves you.
Your friends love you.
They may genuinely believe they're helping.
But if they've never built a business, they probably aren't the best person to tell you how to build one.
If they've never started over at 50, they may not understand why you're finally chasing a dream.
Protect your vision.
Every new idea is fragile.
If you share it with the wrong people too early, their fear can become your fear.
Sometimes you have to protect your dream until it's strong enough to withstand someone else's opinion.
Final Thought
Not everyone gets a vote.
Listen to people who have been where you're trying to go.
Learn from people who are living the kind of life you want to create.
And remember...
Just because someone has an opinion doesn't mean it deserves a seat at your table.
