Modern forensic science revealed important clues about where the Isdal Woman may have spent her childhood.

But investigators still faced the most important question of all.

Who was she?

DNA offered another possible path toward an answer. Researchers were able to obtain genetic information connected to the unidentified woman, including mitochondrial DNA that could provide clues about her maternal ancestry.

But having DNA is not the same as having a name.

More than half a century after her death, the search for a biological connection capable of identifying the Isdal Woman continues.

For decades, investigators had no confirmed name for the mysterious woman found dead in Isdalen, Norway.

But evidence preserved from the original investigation still held information that witnesses and documents could not provide.

Modern isotope analysis of her teeth allowed researchers to reconstruct parts of her early life, pointing toward central Europe and suggesting that she may have moved during childhood.

For the first time, science was beginning to narrow the search for where the Isdal Woman had come from.

But knowing where someone may have grown up is very different from knowing who they were.

After an unidentified woman was discovered dead near Bergen in November nineteen seventy, Norwegian investigators began trying to determine not only who she was, but how she had died.

The investigation uncovered sleeping pills, unusual details surrounding the scene, multiple false identities, and a complicated travel history. Police eventually reached an official conclusion, but questions surrounding the evidence never completely disappeared.

If the woman had deliberately hidden her identity while traveling across Europe, investigators still had to understand why.

On November twenty-ninth, nineteen seventy, a man hiking with his two daughters discovered the body of an unidentified woman in Isdalen, near Bergen, Norway. She carried nothing that clearly revealed who she was.

Investigators soon discovered something even stranger. Identifying labels had been removed from her belongings, and two suitcases connected to her led police to a complicated trail of travel, coded notes, and multiple false identities.

More than half a century later, her real name remains unknown.

On June seventh, nineteen ninety-two, nineteen-year-old Suzanne Streeter, her mother Sherrill Levitt, and eighteen-year-old Stacy McCall disappeared from a home in Springfield, Missouri.

Their cars remained outside. Their personal belongings were still there. There was no confirmed sign explaining where the three women had gone or why all three disappeared during the same night.

Decades later, the Springfield Three remain missing, and one of Missouri's most enduring disappearance cases still has no definitive answer.

In March nineteen ninety-eight, twenty-three-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley was traveling through the Caribbean with her family aboard the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas. During the early morning hours of March twenty-fourth, she disappeared.

The ship was traveling toward Curaçao when Amy went missing. What followed was an international search, an FBI investigation, and years of unanswered questions about whether Amy ever left the ship and what may have happened to her.

More than twenty-eight years later, Amy has not been recovered, and the FBI is still seeking information that could explain her disappearance.

On November twenty-fourth, nineteen seventy-one, a man using the name Dan Cooper boarded a short flight from Portland to Seattle. Before the aircraft reached its destination, he claimed to have a bomb and demanded two hundred thousand dollars and four parachutes.

Hours later, the passengers were safe, but Cooper remained aboard with part of the crew. Somewhere above the Pacific Northwest, he apparently lowered the rear stairs of the Boeing seven twenty-seven and jumped into the darkness with the ransom money.

He was never positively identified, and more than half a century later, no one has conclusively established what happened after he left the aircraft.

As the years passed, the Boy in the Box investigation seemed destined to become another forgotten cold case.
