What does it really mean to prepare the way for Jesus Christ? Why does Mark begin his Gospel account with Old Testament prophecy rather than the birth of Jesus? And are you genuinely prepared to follow King Jesus—or merely practicing a religion of human invention?
In Week 1 of Prepare the Way, Pastor Kevin M. Kelley introduces an expository sermon series through the Gospel of Mark, beginning with Mark 1:1–3 and the extraordinary declaration: "The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God."
Before describing a single miracle, teaching, or event in Jesus' earthly ministry, Mark establishes His identity as the promised Messiah, the eternal Son of God, and the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy. Drawing upon Exodus, Malachi, and Isaiah, Mark reveals that the coming of Jesus Christ was not an unexpected religious development, but the fulfillment of God's sovereign redemptive plan.
Just as God delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt, King Jesus came to accomplish a far greater Exodus—rescuing and redeeming sinners from bondage to sin, Satan, and death. But preparing the way for the LORD isn't about religious traditions, church attendance, charitable activities, or outward appearances. It requires genuine repentance, spiritual regeneration, and a life wholly surrendered to Jesus Christ.
This expository Bible sermon explores the identity of Jesus as the Christ and Son of God, the fulfillment of messianic prophecy, the significance of John the Baptist's ministry, and the biblical meaning of repentance and saving faith. Discover why superficial Christianity, religious hypocrisy, and counterfeit gospels cannot prepare anyone for Christ's return—and why genuine discipleship requires denying self, taking up our cross, and faithfully following Jesus wherever He leads.
Mark doesn't leave us wondering who Jesus is. From the opening verse, he declares that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. And the entire Gospel account confronts us with the responsibility of responding to that eternal and immutable truth.
The question is simple: Are you truly preparing the way for King Jesus through repentance, faith, and surrendered allegiance—or are you following a path of your own making?
