This week’s guest is Julia Kay, the co-founder of Great Wrap an Australian made and owned compostable stretch wrap company based in Melbourne, and this year they’re on a mission to remove 8,910,000 tonnes of plastic stretch wrap sent to America's landfills each year. 

 

And what’s really cool for all my American listeners is that they are launching in the United States this summer. Julia and her partner Jordy launched Great Wrap in 2020 after they noticed the excessive amount of plastic stretch wrap that was heading straight to landfill each year. Jordy, a former winemaker and Julia, a former architect knew they needed to find a solution. 

 

Personally, I’ve struggled to find a perfect saran wrap/cling wrap solution for my home so I was really excited to learn more. But where Julia and Jordy are really reducing the amount of plastic that goes into landfills is by decreasing the amount of plastic wrap used in shipping. Incredibly, they found a way to turn potato scraps into their stretch wrap that won’t put any more microplastics out into the environment.

 

In this episode you’ll learn how Julia and Jordy the issue of plastic waste and actually turned it into a solution and a business and what they’ve learned along the way (from the good and the bad!).

Sleep is one of the most important things your body needs. And unfortunately, business owners and business people in general tend to be chronically deprived of the stuff. Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as “yogic sleep” or “effortless relaxation.” 

 

The great thing about this yogic sleep is that it will provide a deep rest and relaxation that you won’t find in a lot of other practices. And if you don’t consider yourself a yogi, don’t worry. Yoga nidra usually only requires only one (or a couple) of really simple poses. This practice focuses mostly on meditation and bringing your body to a state of relaxation.

 

This 15-minute yoga nidra session can just be done laying down on a yoga mat or even just in bed. It’s a great option to listen to before you fall asleep tonight!

 

Guided by Jess from Yoga with Jess who is a certified yoga teacher with a specialist in women’s health and hormones. She has trained with yoga medicine and hopes to be able to bring balance to those who attend her classes. Based in New Zealand, she is the owned of My Little Yoga Place and offers virtual group classes and 1:1 sessions.

When Sophia started getting acne in her teens she had no idea it would lead her to where she is today. She now runs SANA Skin, a successful skincare line that has helped hundreds of people clear their skin. In fact, despite Sophia always having an interest in holistic health and clearing her skin, she tried a few different paths before arriving at business owning. She went to esthetician school before deciding being an esthetician wasn’t for her and then tried freelance writing. And finally after managing to clear her own skin through well-researched internal and external adjustments, Sophia finally thought she wanted to create a course around helping other people clear their skin.

 

But, that was before she heard a voice clear as day tell her it wasn’t about the course, but instead about the face oil she’d made to accompany the course. So not only did Sophia dive into that face oil that ended up becoming a best-seller and the start to her 6-product line, but also really helped Sophia focus on where the divine was guiding her.

 

While Sophia always felt connected to her more spiritual side, in this interview she shares how leaning into the divine and strengthening her mindset brought her from jobless and penny pinching to running a successful, growing business and creating an engaged community around holistic health.

When Steph Hon started Cadence, it was born out of her own need for more sustainable and better designed travel containers. Steph’s specific story began on one of her climbing trips, where she not only struggled to fit her curated skincare routine into those little plastic travel containers we all know (and likely dislike), but also struggled to fit the poorly designed, disposable containers into a lifestyle where she valued things like sustainability, individuality, and top-notch design. 

 

Eventually, Steph and her team went on to test over 200 prototypes before making the first magnetic and refillable travel container that is completely made from recycled ocean bound plastic. The only thing was there wasn’t yet a market for the reusable travel containers she envisioned. Despite this, in a world with brands like Hydro Flask and Pyrex, we’ve made it known that there is a market for reusable, eco-conscious containers and Steph had a hunch there could be a market for Cadence. 

 

And as it turned out, there were a lot of people who were sick of the plastic travel containers from their local drugstore and were looking for a solution they could love for life. Cadence ended up reaching profitability less than a year into business, and since their launch just two years ago has been featured in numerous publications like Forbes and the NYT, and sold to customers around the globe. Steph shares so much goodness in this episode from her career change to what it takes to be a founder on a day-to-day business, how she was able to raise over $400k from 100% angel investors, and so much more!

What started off as an investment in a few magnolia trees for winter filler flowers for florists, ended up turning into their three businesses: The Magnolia Company, Seeds of Life, and Mary’s Magnolias. Their first ever business, The Magnolia Company, offers handmade magnolia-inspired goods like magnolia wreaths, garlands, and swags, as well as other naturally inspired gifts.

 

Seeds of Life is a gift tree company that offers trees and plants for life’s most important people and occasions, but their best sellers are their memorial trees. Finally, Mary’s Magnolias, their cosmetic company, uses their magnolia flowers and cold pressed magnolia seed oil to make soaps, lotions, and bath bombs. You’ll learn how their three companies blossomed out of their Florida based farm, which has been in Julie’s family for generations, as well as many of the business tips they’ve learned along the way.

In this episode, I welcomed Nick Gedda to the show. Nick is an expert marketer, business owner, and author. After spending years of his life dreaming of something bigger, but never following through because the timing didn’t feel perfect or he wasn’t 100% ready, Nick dared to pursue his dreams and in a 5 month span published a book, started his own company, started a clothing line, and quit his job. While Nick technically works full time for an agency as the Cheif Marketing Officer, he actually considers it his side gig.

 

His real calling is working as a consultant as he helps take people from the dreaming stage to the doing stage. He then helps his clients make marketing a natural part of their business by developing marketing systems based on each client’s specific buyer’s journey. In this episode, Nick demystifies marketing terms like “systems” and “processes” and explains how any business owner can follow his marketing process using a real life example. In this episode, I was lucky enough to sit down with Kristen Kellogg, Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, filmmaker, travel expert, and serial entrepreneur. Kristen is the founder of Mapped Wellness, a virtual integrative health coaching and functional medicine clinic, the co-founder of Border Free Media, a content marketing agency, as well as the co-owner of Salt & Wind Travel, a boutique travel company. Today, we walk through both Kristen’s business and health journey and the many moments where they’ve intertwined. Before getting certified as a health coach, Kristen used to spend about 85% of her time on the road for the work she did for both Border Free Media and Salt & Wind Travel. 

 

While staying busy might’ve seemed great for her business, Kristen shares how a combination of certain life practices, including her work schedule, exacerbated her extreme eczema and eventually led to her developing an auto-immune disease. We learn how Kristen dealt with multiple health crises and how Kristen eventually turned her health around and began Mapped Wellness. This episode is a great one for any business person out there who is struggling with their health or feels like their work might be negatively influencing their wellbeing.
