As we approach the New Year, it’s not uncommon to set a few personal or professional goals. But instead of resolving to lose a few pounds or to become a regular member of that new country club (in the hopes of landing a few leads), our guest has a better, more realistic idea – simply focus on yourself.
Maureen Metcalf, CEO of Metcalf & Associates, is a renowned advisor, speaker, coach, and consultant. We talk about the importance of resiliency, and what you can start doing today to become more resilient.
Put On Your Own Mask First
If you’ve been on a plane, you’ve heard the pre-flight safety speech: "In the event of an emergency, please put on your own oxygen mask first, before trying to help others." When things go wrong, other people look towards leadership (or perceived leaders) for an indication of how they should reaction. As a leader, your actions are contagious, so you have to be prepared.
If you are interesting in setting an impactful New Year’s Resolution, you will want to consider the self-care topics discussed in this episode:
- Take care of your physical well-being (otherwise, you won’t be able to show up at your best, and other people will model that behavior).
- Be aware of and manage your thinking and emotions – especially negative self-talk. How you react to and frame a situation is one of the only things that you have control over (and, again, it’s contagious).
- Build a strong support system, at work and at home. You want people you can trust, who will always do what is in your interest and the interest of the organization.
