Three witnesses in agreement — the Spirit, the water, and the blood — and a testimony greater than any human court: the testimony God has given about His Son. This is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life.
** *A note on verses 7–8: this reading follows theearliest Greek manuscripts, as nearly all modern translations do (including the Berean Standard Bible we read from). Some older English Bibles include a longer wording here ("the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit") that entered the manuscript tradition much later. Nothing in the passage's teaching — or the Bible's teaching on the Trinity — depends on the longer wording.***
