Publisher's Summary:
A super-robot called Snookums discovers how to build his very own superbombs in this thrilling sci-fi tale by Randall Garrett! Now Earth is by no means the safest place for him to be, to say the least. Dr. Fitzhugh, his designer, and Leda Crannon, a child psychologist serving as Snookums' nursemaid, therefore agree to set up Operation Brainchild, a plan to transport Snookums to a very distant planet. Only one big problem: Snookums is none too keen on this idea.

âIt is as difficult to jolt the nerves of a robot as it is to blind an oyster.â
This early novel of long-time sf writer Randall Garrett starts off running as M. R. Gabriel, a. k. a.: Mike the Angel, goes to his favorite hangout for obscure and antique electronics, the "Ye Quainte Olde Elecktronicks Shoppe". When he gets there he find that the shop that is run by his friend Harry MacDougal is in the process of being robbed by a pair of punks. Only Mike is an inventor, and he has an invention that stops the burglary, only, Mikeâs intervention catches the interest of the gang behind the attempted heist, and there will be an attempted murder, and a death will ensue.
All of this happens within the first fifty, and in those fifty pages we are also thrust into a future as seedy as anything in the yet to develop cyberpunk genre, including such things as pocket (cell) phones, computer programs imbedded in people's clothing, gaudy punk make-up, futuristic hand weapons, etc. Mike has also been contracted, and then later intellectually seduced, into building a spaceship, the William Branschell around Project Brainchild, the largest, to date, cybernetic brain. Of course, to do this he has to officially rejoin the Space Service under his old commanding officer, the gruff Captain Sir Henry "Black Bart" Quill.
But to build this ship, Mike has to travel to the Antarctica, a place he does not want to go. And when he arrives he sees that the security has been beefed up, that he will meet the robotic stand-in for Snookums, the cybernetic brain, and the beautiful, and red-haired, Leda Crannon, a child psychologist and teacher for Snookums, and the cyberbrainâs designer Dr. Morris Fitshugh. And Mike will soon find out the reason why Snookums must leave on the newly built, and untested, "William Branchell". Snookums has found a way to create and manufacture a new superweapon, a devastating superweapon that anybody would be able to build and detonate.
And as the "William Branchell" is on its way to its new destination, and Snookumâs new home, things start to go wrong. First the ship, then Snookums, starts acting weird, then there is an attempted homicide, then things start failing on the ship again. And meanwhile, several crewmembers are hot for the teacher, and want to follow the Leda.
And then the crap truly hits the fan as somebody sabotages the "William Branchell" which will result in a death.
