Carter finds that he has great strength on this planet, due to its lesser gravity. Carter soon falls in among the Tharks, a nomadic tribe of the planet's warlike, four-armed, green inhabitants.
Thanks to his strength and combat abilities he rises in position in the tribe and earns the respect and eventually the friendship of Tars Tarkas, one of the Thark chiefs. The Tharks subsequently capture Dejah Thoris, Princess of Helium, a member of the humanoid red Martian race. The red Martians inhabit a loose network of city states and control the desert planet's canals, along which its agriculture is concentrated. Carter rescues her from the green men to return her to her people.

I really liked this book
Did you know the movie John Carter is based on this series? I did not, which makes my reading of this book that much cooler for some reason. So this is my second book in the Decades of Sci-Fi challenge that I have finished. I am officially two books behind. ::shrugs shoulders:: Whatever, I do what I want.
This book was fantastic!! It was fast paced and explained simply. Okay, so there was a LOT of telling but, it was done so well. I was quite happily able to overlook it. I loved how easily he was able to incorporate himself in to each civilization he encountered.
I loved the mystery of it too. How did he come to be on Mars? Itâs left up to the readerâs imagination to fill in the blanks. This is a risky endeavor for any author to partake in but he pulls it off quite nicely. The writing was extremely easy to follow considering the book was written almost 100 years ago.
Compared to the last book I read in this challenge, it was a cakewalk. Iâm not much for ââclassic literatureâ but if the rest are like this, I will definitely have no problems finishing this challenge.
One of Burroughs' best novels
In this first volume in the John Carter of Mars series, one of America's (and the world's) best adventure writers turned to science fiction and produced one of his most enduring and copied works. Ok, it postulates intelligent life on Mars. Remember that Burroughs began his Martian adventures before WW1, when the possibility of such life on Mars was still taken seriously. If it bothers you, just imagine that the setting is a distant galaxy or an alternate universe. Don't let it keep you from reading one of the great sci-fi fantasy novels.
A clever and entertaining book by the author of the Tarzan books
Because of the expiration of their copyrights many excellent books are available in various formats for a very low fee, or even free from amazon, as it does for this book. Amazon also offers the entire set of all Edgar Rice Burroughsâ seven Jack Carter books about his experiences on Mars for only ninety-nine cents. Burroughs is famous for writing the Tarzan books. This book is totally unlike the movie that was made about it in virtually every way, as I show in my review of the film on amazon. The following is some highlights about the book, but I am careful not to include a host of details that make the book interesting, clever, and suspenseful.
Jack Carter of Virginia was a captain in the Confederate Army.
