    Publisher's Summary:
"The Chapter Ends" is a sci-fi story set tens of thousands of years in the future. What is the primary concern here is quite simply the end of human habitation on Earth and some serious decision making on what to do next... The author makes some very interesting and deep observations about human and cultural evolution.

    The End, certainly.
Anderson's long short about the last man on Earth is interesting. As with any sci-fi, you have to accept certain premises and those in this story are unexceptional. It's not hard to follow them and get on with the story.
What I found irritating is Anderson's too-long description of the pastoral life. You can see this in some of his other work, his fascination with some iealized French rural society--Star Fox--and in one or two of his Dominic Flandry stories, and in Orion Shall Rise.
He really let himself go in this one, and the story could have been much shorter without about half of the references and descriptions.
Nevertheless, the idea is interesting. You wonder whether the last man really wanted to go but had staked out his position too early and was too proud to change his mind.
A classic, with a twist from the common edition
"The Chapter Ends" is a staple in most of the short story collections by Poul Anderson, to the point that I can't think of a single Anderson anthology which does not contain it.
Here, it stands alone as a single story by itself.
However, it is not exactly the same story which appears in all the anthologies. Whether this is the original work and the one included in most collections has been abridged, I cannot vouch. I can say, though, that it is not the same story and the ending is completely different from all the prior versions I have read.
If you are a fan of Poul Anderson's work, and wish to read one that has the flavor of being the original and unadulterated story, I would recommend this. If you have never read any of the abridged versions, you won't want to after reading what has the distinct appearance of being original Anderson.
    Four Stars
A poignant story of the last old man who chooses not to emigrate from a threatened earth.
    early work
Not bad for the money. Was entertaining being immersed with the thoughts of the last mam on earth. Anderson brings the tension level up and then the stars shine!!!
    Stubborn Old Coot
-that is the first impression. Why would anyone not take advantage of a free trip to somewhere better?
Then the hints take hold. People live lightly on this world, growing or making tools of local materials. The grandiose cities of old are no longer, and raiders have taken anything worth stealing. It is not an easy life, yet one with the rhythms of seasons. However, these people will obey orders from authorities to evacuate.
Finally all he has are his memories....

    Author: Edward Elmer Smith
    Narrator: Edward Miller
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-06-17
    Publisher: Audioliterature
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Vortex Blaster" is a collection of three science fiction short stories by author E. E. Smith, published in 1960. The stories included are "The Vortex Blaster", "Storm Cloud on Deka" und "The Vortex Blaster Makes War", and they all bear the stamp of unmistakable quality to be expected from the old sci-fi specialist Smith!
The hero of the collection is Neal "Storm" Cloud, a nuclear engineer with an amazingly mathematical mind. In his universe, there is something we apparently don't have in ours, self-sustaining vortices of atomic energy. These are like a small piece of the heart of a star. A churning vortex of heat and light that grows while consuming whatever it is in contact with. In theory, they can be blown out by a precise amount of explosives, placed at an exact spot in the vortex, at exactly the right time. The problem is, it takes the best computers available hours to calculate the factors needed, and only seconds are left to get the correct amount of explosives on target...

A short edition of a good novel...
This disc contains, basicaly, the first two chapters of the novel and no more so if you're looking for the complete novel go for the Books In Motion edition read by Reed McColm. With this edition there is no mention of who the reader is. The packaging is pretty basic but of good quality with the disc securely held in place. All in All not a bad recording but as I said not the complete novel. My advice, give this recording a miss and go for the full novel. It will cost you more but it's worth it.
Short story - not a "real" book
I was initially excited to think there was another book in the Lensman series but, alas, this is a very loosely related short story and not a book. Not sure how it should be listed in the Kindle store but calling it a "book" is a stretch of the imagination. Not up to the standard E. E. Smith set in the actual series books but I don't know if this short story preceded or followed publication of the other stories.
NOT THE WHOLE BOOK ... MASTERS OF THE VORTEX CONTAINS THE WHOLE NOVEL
Finaloy someone has republished THE WHOLE BOOK. But it is called MASTERS OF THE VORTEX, not The Vortex Blaster. Forget this and go buy the whole book for $2.99.
I really enjoyed this and Master of the Vortex
I read the Lensmen series back in the 1970's; but I was not aware of his other works. I really enjoyed this and Master of the Vortex. This is classic "Space Opera" stuff; And I love it.
Just a chapter not the book - avoid at all costs
The Vortex Blaster in this form is merely the first chapter of "Masters of the Vortex". This is probably the form it first appeared in in some 1940s Sci-fi magazine. SInce the full book isn't available on kindle give this a miss.

    Publisher's Summary:
"The Knights of Arthur" by Frederik Pohl, published in 1958, is a humorous sci-fi tale. The sum total population of the entire U.S. is now less than 10,000(!) as the listener is taken on a wildly funny ride, an Arthurian quest, actually; but of a very eccentric nature indeed, as Arthur is an entity with very strong and particular opinions... without body and limbs, by the way.

    Cheerful Post-Apocalyptic Story
Almost a generation before the current spate of post-apocalyptic fiction (and completely free of zombies!), Frederik Pohl wrote this tale in 1958-- anticipating not merely an entire sub-genre of science fiction but the actual scientific "innovation" of nuclear bombs designed to kill people but leave property relatively intact and non-radioactive, last heard of, I believe, in the mid-1980s.
This story's three protagonists were enlisted sailors on a deployed submarine when the bombs went off, and were simply discharged into what was left of America after the sub returned to port. Two of the three are recognizable as Navy vets-- the third much less so, as Navy surgeons preserved his brain in a steel container following his being seriously injured. Arthur, the sailor reduced to a brain in a can, is quite conscious and capable, when attached to an electric typewriter (this was written before computers), of communicating. Like a sailor-- there's nothing mechanical about him, other than his 'body'.
The story involves an unlikely plot, a major in the Air Force Reserves (who runs the City of New York, population 15,000), a pretty girl (of course), and an enormous and luxurious ocean liner. What's not to like?
    Entertaining
This book is definitely worth reading especially if you like classic science fiction authors. What would you do if you were there? I wonder.
    An old classic
I remember when Pohl first published this story in the old "Galaxy" magazine. It included a couple of illustrating cartoons from an artist who later made his name with "Mad Magazine" (which name I can't remember, alas!). This version doesn't include the cartoons, but it's still a nice, light romp in a quite original post-apocalyptic world. It involves a brain in a suitcase
"Arthur", a couple of con-man characters who are Arthur's protectors and friends, a blustery former military officer who took over a depopulated New York City, and a very large ship. Really fun reading!
    Excellent SciFi
Forgot to save and lost it before reafing all the great tall tales.
So funny I couldn't put it down.
This lo-ong short story is so funny I had trouble putting it down. Fast paced, and an "I don't take myself too seriously" attitude. Loved it.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Admiral Kurt Brubacher spins the logs, reports, and history of the Orion Federation into a spellbinding action saga that starts nearly three years after the end of Righteous Reign. The opening volleys in a new war had just been fired. Back then, thousands of warships had suddenly occupied positions along more than 100 light years of the Federation's border. George Bryant had dubbed this enigmatic enemy "The Inscrutables".
Both forces continually move and countermove in an attempt to gain tactical advantage over the massive chessboard. Periodically, this mysterious foe has launched vicious suicidal attacks. But Admiral George Bryant's Mobile Fifth RAC forces are only permitted to defend, never allowed to retaliate. It would offend the neighboring CauDo to pursue these cunning antagonists in their territory. All the while, half a trillion Orion Federation citizens attempt to maintain a semblance of normalcy despite the strain.
But George is not alone. It is Kurt who comes up with a deceitful plan. In heart-stopping, pulse-pounding fashion, he shifts listeners back and forth through time as he shuffles us through successive battles, each more dangerous and complex than the preceding one. And, in the middle of it all, the Federation faces a predicament as serious as the impasse that led to a past civil war, just as one hero's most euphoric moment transforms into his greatest anguish.
In the end, it's all up to Admiral Bryant. He must execute the duplicitous scheme that's concocted to rid the Federation of the Inscrutables. If he's triumphant, he will vanquish the fiercest enemy they have ever confronted. Being wrong means the end of the Orion Federation.

    Good story, worth reading
When I was about twelve years old or so I read THE DAY THEY H-BOMBED LOS ANGELES. For some reason, something made me think of that book, so I looked it up on Amazon hoping it might be available cheap or included in a megapack. It wasnât, but there were several other stories by Robert Moore Williams available. This one, though nothing really special, was not a disappointment. It makes me wonder why so many low-budget science fictions movies are so bland. This could easily be adapted into a reasonably good low-budget film that would be far better than those we see. The story has an optimistic, somewhat philosophical, and even unexpected end. This is the kind of science fiction that made me a fan as a teenager.
not a great novel, but ok if your flight is cancelled ...
The plot isn't very advanced, not a great novel, but ok if your flight is cancelled until next day.
    A great story
This story is not quite masterfully written yet is great read with a lot of concepts that are thought provoking. The ending could have had been more descriptive. Overall great short story.
    Interesting Read
I thought this was a fun short story. Lots of twists and turns kept me reading to find out the solution.

    Epic alien adventure!
With her old adversary Glaisne now loose on Helvena along with the fey creature Ash, Keris of the Kelanni must risk everything by awakening an ancient power so dangerous that it could destroy both worlds....
The first Lodestone trilogy saw Keris of the Kelanni join a ragtag band to combat the 'alien' invasion of her world.
Five turns of the season have now passed. Keris receives a disturbing report of the theft of an ancient artefact. The perpetrator? Alexander McCann, the last human left on Kelanni!
When she tracks him down in a liquor den, the drunken McCann spins a fantastical tale. An ancient sphere recording claims that her people, the Kelanni, are alien invaders just as the humans were. Worse yet it tells of Ash, an all-powerful alien being, who almost destroyed her world in the in the distant past.
Now sinister forces are plotting his return.
Accompanied by McCann, Keris must travel to the ancient ruined city of Gal Mador, uncover the truth of her people's dark past, and find a way to defeat an invincible alien foe.

Truly classic book from an incredible collection of indie sci fi
The âLodestone Seriesâ is the best indie sci-fi show that I have ever read! It combines all of the elements that I look for in science fiction: strong plot with surprises thrown in, strong characters, intriguing mythology, and overall story development.
What happens after the good guys save the world? Mark Whitewayâs Eternityâs Shadow answers that question for Keris, McCann, Boxx, and others, but not in the way which I thought it would. Instead, Eternity's Shadow continues the story line delving into the civilization of an alien worldâs past while also following Kerisâ quest to save the world (yet again). The trick is whether the book can pull off these simultaneous story lines without becoming redundant.
    Surprisingly, it does.
There is a different feel with this book. It feels more evolved. The characters are the same and the situation is slightly the same, but they are more comfortable in the environment and able to express more of themselves. Keris is still as warlike as ever, but she is more reflective. She finds a great partner in Juca. Boxx is still characteristically an ally to Kerisâ group. but she is now has an established place with the Chandara. Other characters like Zemira and Ash return, but their allegiances are criss-crossed with the passage of time.
It was a great read, especially if you want to get lost in a world of aliens and starship battles on an alien planet where things arenât quite what they seem.
Mark Whiteway is the best in indie sci-fi!
    Awesome Sci-Fi/Fantasy Adventure!!
Keris is in the forest with the hu-man McCann on a mission to find the ancient one Zemira. McCann is not one she wants to be with but he is the only one who like herself knows of the ancient spheres. When a high pitched shriek fills the air Keris does her job to go investigate where she finds one of the calm, peace-loving Chandara dead. Just as she is about to find out why, others arrive to lead her and McCann to the Great Tree of the Chandara where she is accused of murder.
