GOD, MACHINE - OR LISTENING POST FOR OUTSIDERS?
Horng sat opposite the tiny, fragile creature who held a microphone, its wires attached to an interpreting machine. He blinked his huge eyes slowly, his stiff mouth fumblingly forming words of a language his race had not used for thirty thousand years. "Kor was... is... God... Knowledge."
He had tried to convey this to the small creatures who had invaded his world, but they did not heed. Their ill-equipped brains were trying futilely to comprehend the ancient race memory of his people. Now they would attempt further to discover the forbidden directives of Kor. Horng remembered, somewhere far back in the fossil layers of his thoughts, a warning. They must be stopped! If he had to, he would stamp out these creatures who were called "humans".

    Narrator: Kathryn Merry
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 37 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-09-17
    Publisher: Novel Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
It is 1965, and Ginny Eckhardt is a science fiction writer. She's been published in the big science fiction magazines and is friends with many of the popular science fiction authors of the day. Her husband, Walden, has just been selected by NASA as one of the New Nineteen Apollo astronauts...which means Ginny will be a member of the Astronaut Wives Club.
Although the realities of spaceflight fascinate Ginny, her gender bars her from the US space program. Her science fiction offers little in the way of consolation - but perhaps there is something she can do about that....
Covering the years 1965 to 1972, when Walden Eckhardt lifts off aboard Apollo 15 as the mission's lunar module pilot, this is Ginny's life: wife, science fiction writer, astronaut wife...because that is All That Outer Space Allows.
Selected for the James Tiptree JR Award honor list.

Alternative history doesn't get much better than this
Extraordinary conclusion to the British author's acclaimed and award-winning "Apollo Quartet".
Alternative history doesn't get much better than this, as Sales posits a subtle, nuanced version of the Space Age and those intimately involved with the mission to put human beings on the moon. It is an elite, males-only society and we get the inside view from one of the "astronaut wives", who happens to be a remarkable, strong-willed and talented woman. Fans of science fiction and the history of the race to the moon will be captivated; the book rewards multiple readings, Sales' vision and enviable ability to realistically and credibly depict characters and their environs a thing to behold.
Guaranteed to secure a place on a few prize lists at the end of the year. The entire quartet is a treat for the imagination and absolutely indispensable to sky fy mavens. Beautifully designed books, featuring state of the art fiction. What more could you ask for?
A space symphony, not a space opera.
This is an astonishingly good book. The fourth and last of the Apollo Quartet, it brings a beautiful and totally unexpected conclusion to the overall story. I laughed out loud in delight when I realised what Sales had done to bring the previous three episodes into the overall story arc.
It probably won't please everyone, and it's not designed to do so (I'm not going to spoii it).but as a subversive revisionist historioghraphy of early SF and fandom it's marvellous. And as a literary exercise it's to my mind a triumph.
And as always, the depth of research Sales has done to underpin this whole series is breathtaking. Highly recommended.
A definite and unassailable five stars
In which Ian Sales draws his alternate-historical space programme to a triumphant close, tying together all the loose threads from all three previous volumes and bringing Earth-75 back into the Alpha Timeline....
No, not really. In fact, not at all, apart from that part about it being triumphant. Because the Quartet as a whole is exactly that. Adventures in storytelling and literature as much as adventures in low-Earth orbit and science fiction, and All That Outer Space Allows is the final proof of that.

    Title: The Explorer
    Author: James Smythe
    Narrator: Rich Keeble
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 25 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-09-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
A tense, claustrophobic and gripping science fiction thriller from the author of The Testimony.
When journalist Cormac Easton is selected to document the first manned mission into deep space, he dreams of securing his place in history as one of humanity's great explorers.
But in space, nothing goes according to plan.
The crew wake from hypersleep to discover their captain dead in his allegedly fail-proof safety pod. They mourn, and Cormac sends a beautifully written eulogy back to Earth. The word from ground control is unequivocal: no matter what happens, the mission must continue.
But as the body count begins to rise, Cormac finds himself alone and spiralling towards his own inevitable death...unless he can do something to stop it.
    Critic Reviews:
"It's like an episode of Star Trek written by JM Coetzee." (Guardian)
"The Explorer has the dreamlike detachment of an Ishiguro novel." (Financial Times)
"Beautifully written, creepy as hell. The Explorer is as clever in its unravelling as it is breathlessly claustrophobic." (Lauren Beukes, author of The Shining Girls)

Exciting story that keeps you guessing
Partly classic sci-fi, partly modern thriller. so refreshing to read (hear!) something unexpected in the genre. Great characters, superb pacing. Loved it. Very happy to know there is a sequel.
In space no one can hear you grind your teeth!
Initially placed this title on my list, though not 'next purchase?' status. Then - along came "The Echo" and I had second thoughts - that gestalt logic - you feel me? So - next credit: "The Explorer". My earlier reservations were ratified - unfortunately! First off you get a 'death-per-page' until it's just Cormac; then the weird thing happens; that's the high point I'm afraid - it's pretty much downhill from there; you then are treated to an ex----tended recap of everything you've just been swept through, though from a different point of view, PLUS other material from the pre-launch preparations - not especially illuminating... this entire story is essentially a foreword to "The Echo"; if you can take that then maybe Part 2 will have made Part 1 worth the trip. Watch that helmet seal lol

    Great Story!
Every bit as fascinating as Book 1! I was totally captivated from beginning to end! A definite recommendation! I only hope more is in the works
    Great adventure
This book is a compilation of multiple stories with the same characters. The last includes additional characters who interact with the previous ones. Overall, well done and enjoyable reading.
    Trash
    Poor authorship. Unbelievable.
Love the characters. Military part needs work.
This is the second book of the series. I gave the first book 5 stars. I gave this 3 stars because the military part was so weak. I Love the main characters! It is ok that they are so naive. You brought in a ship's captain and a senior engineer on a space navy ship and they act like bumbling tourists. I want smart decisive protagonists on both sides of military fiction.
    Five Stars

    Very worth the read
As someone who has read over a dozen dystopian novels and series this one is at the top of my list. The book is very well written and it is easy for the reader to enter the world being created by Lamb. The lead character is a strong female, finally a good role model heroine. Many of the leads in other books fall into the rebellion by accident or are lured by romantic entanglements, Evelyn is clear minded and searching for truth to better her society. I can't wait for the next book!
    Fast-moving action keeps you guessing
From the first page, the author has you asking questions and flipping pages quickly as you follow the action and look for answers. Just when you think you have some of those questions answered, you realize that not only were you wrong, but you suddenly have even more questions.
The book ended with so many possibilities. I can't wait for the sequel to come out so I can find out if my thoughts of where things go from here are even close. Looking forward to running into old characters and meeting new ones when the sequel comes out...hopefully it won't be too long of a wait.
    A must-read
It's so refreshing to read a story with a young female protagonist that does not center around a romance plot. Filtered was at once eerie, suspenseful, and oddly hopeful. As you learn and grow with Evelyn, the methods and actions of the Great Society become both more and less clear. Evelyn feels like a real person. She's not the perfect heroine, and she's not the stereotypical anti-hero. She's a confused young girl who is trying to navigate her way through a desolate dystopia. Come for the sci-fi dystopia, stay for the amazing characters.
it should resonate well with readers who enjoyed Hunger Games
An interesting read, in a very interesting world. A dark dystopian young adult novel, it should resonate well with readers who enjoyed Hunger Games, Maze Runner, etc. I only have two complaints. First some of the ethical message in the book is very simplistic and blunt. Second, the writing style was redundant at times, making it feel a little bland. Ultimately these may be issues more with the genre style (young adult) than the author's ability. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.
    Fast paced exciting read!
In a world where female literary characters often only stumble into taking a stand, Filtered gives the reading no doubt that it's lead is ready to take a stand. Though initially timid as harder decisions are forced on her she rises and rises again to meet the challenge, I can't wait to read the next installments.

    Great Series
    Any additional comments?
Great addition to the series. This is one of those series that is fantastic but no seems to know about it. This story is well written, entertaining and very enjoyable just like the previous books.
The whole series is creative, original and highly entertaining. This is definitely not a stand alone story. You really need to read the series in order to understand everything that has/is going on. It's worth it.
Action, political intrigue, mental abilities, suspense, betrayal and more.
The Vicheu can hear the thoughts of everyone around them. They are never completely alone in their own minds. Nikolas being the most powerful among them can even feel when someone close to him is hurt or in physical pain.
Even though Nikolas has been rescued, is now safe and back with his family things are not good. He constantly relives the torture and pain he endured at the hands of the Skillians. Now posing as humans and hiding from their enemies they should be safe. Things are not as they seem though. The Vicheu are being stalked and one by one and disappearing. Marco, Nikolas, Rade and the rest of their group are searching for clues to who is hunting the Vicheu to stop them before anyone else can disappear.
Zachary Johnson did a fantastic job with the narration once again. Nice voice. Easy to listen to for long periods of time. Good character voices. Clearly spoken with a smooth even pace.Great effects for the mind speaking. You can feel all the emotions of the characters. He brought the story to life with all the different elements he put into the narration. Very enjoyable.
I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator of publisher.
"... claws scraping against the stone."
    Any additional comments?
    Something evil is coming ...
Even though he has been rescued, returned to his family, Nikolas still lives in the hell of his dreams. But in his waking hours he barely feels. He has killed, yes, but is he also a murderer of innocents? The most powerful of them all, his telepathic abilities bring him headaches, his anger can often only be dampened by twin brother, Marco and yet, like all of the Vicheu, he has to hide his kinetic and other gifts just as he needs to hide the scars which cover his face and his body. Plus he is bullied by the pathetic little humans, not recognising his strength, but who, nevertheless still depend on the Vicheu to keep them safe. Somehow, trying to fit in just doesn't seem to be working; and other forces are out to get him, the Vicheu and everyone else.
Another exciting and action filled book from Autumn Warren set in a world peopled by numerous complex characters where morality is sometimes a movable feast, or, as one of them comments, there is "no right or wrong...This is fun.". Sadly for everyone, most others would not agree with her ideas of a good time.
But fun, of a harrowing type, is what this book is. With numerous, often complex characters appearing thick and fast, it certainly helps to have read the preceding two books to make sense of who, what and why they are.

The communication from 2180 to 1972 must be a Compub trick !
The new class of Mahon-modified machines were picking up strange signs apparently from the future in 2180, one hundred and eight years in the future. A viral infection was predicted, actually described as past history. The history they claimed showed that 2180 had intervened in this manner. There was a broadcasting machine the future boys wanted them to build, for improved communication. Seemed as if the future boys had problems with there communicators breaking. The Metech ( Metallurgical Technicians ) assigned asserted it all must be a lie, if the future had Mahon-modified coms they certainly wouldn't break. So the messages simply couldn't be from the future. It had to be the Compubs (Communist Republicans of the Baltic states ). Now to fix there wagon and watch the wheels come off !!
This is a nice little story and a quick read, I like most of his other stories better. I thought the Compubs where handled better in The Invasion also by him.
    What happened?
    In summation...
There was this thing that did that stuff and then it stopped.
    Typical Golden Age Sci-Fi
Full of topical drama (for 1949) and a menagerie of old-timey stereotypes, this is Golden Age pulp Science fiction at its most irritating. A quick read with lots of action, few insights and very little science.
