There are growing concerns that the government's multibillion-rand wage bill is growing too fast compared to the value it is generating. This as Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene is preparing to present his first Medium Term Budget Policy Statement to parliament next week.The public sector wage bill is one of government's biggest expenditure items, at 4 hundred and R39billion for 2014 to 2015. About 1.3 million people are employed by the national and provincial governments and their wage talks opened recently with a demand for a 15% salary increase. Arms deal critic, Terry Crawford-Browne continued with his catalogue of serious allegations during his testimony at the Arms Procurement Commission in Pretoria yesterday. The former banker claimed the late defence Minister Joe Modise's death might have been due to poisoning. He also claims the late SACP leader Chris Hani was on the verge of exposing Modise's alleged corrupt activities in the arms deal before his assassination. The SABC's Phumzile Mlangeni reports

Arms deal campaigner, Terry Crawford Browne has continued to throw accusations at senior politicians who are allegedly involved in the leaking of arms deal-related documents. This time around, he alleges ANC stalwart and MP, Winnie Madikizela Mandela, allegedly leaked arms deal documents proving fraud and corruption took place during the acquisition process of the Strategic Defence Procurement Packages. Government is looking at a number of interventions to curb cable theft. It has emerged that the City of Johannesburg incurred 75-million rand loss in the last financial year due to cable theft. Big business says it's losing billions due to this practice and there are concerns that those arrested just receive a slap on the wrist. The problem of cable theft came under the spotlight at the three-day convention of Association of Municipal Electricity Utilities of Southern Africa, which is on its second day in Midrand north of Johannesburg.
