Four suspects were arrested in Houghton this morning after JMPD officers recovered a hijacked Toyota Corolla and an unlicensed firearm at a property previously owned by former president Nelson Mandela. In a statement, the JMPD says the vehicle was tracked following its hijacking on Louis Botha Avenue earlier today.  The suspects, three men and a woman, were detained at Norwood SAPS. The Department of Correctional Services has confirmed that investigations are underway following the death of Bacelio Alphonso on December 30, 2024, at Leeuwkop Prison in Johannesburg. Speaking on this program yesterday, Alphonso's family called for justice, expressing frustration over unanswered questions surrounding his death. The Family spokesperson alleged that  a source within the prison, alleged Alphonso was beaten to death by officials who claimed he attacked them after allegedly smoking crystal meth. This groundbreaking legislation enforces a 15% effective tax rate on multinational corporations, ensuring they contribute their fair share. The act targets tax avoidance by closing loopholes that allow companies to benefit from low-tax jurisdictions, potentially raising R8 billion in revenue by 2026. Rooted in the OECD's global tax reform framework, it applies to firms with annual revenues exceeding €750 million. While some organizations applaud the move, critics argue the threshold is too high, leaving many companies unaffected. Implementation begins this year. In a statement the family says Authorities informed the family the following day, but key details, including the exact time of death, remain unclear. Family members, says a source within the prison, allege Alphonso was beaten to death by officials who claimed he attacked them after allegedly smoking crystal meth. Lobby group - AfriForum has stressed the need of publishing matric results in newspapers - citing the benefits for learners in rural areas and villages who have limited internet access. Afriforum's Head of Cultural Affairs, Alana Bailey spoke to SABC NEWS during the brief court adjournment in the Pretoria High court where the Information Regulator has brought an urgent application to stop the Basic Education Department from publicly publishing the 2024 matric results like in newspapers. Afriforum has been invited to the case as a friend of the court. Bailey says publishing exam numbers without names balances privacy and public interest, a stance supported by a 2022 court ruling. The presiding judge in the matter has questioned the urgency of the application....

China is currently facing a new virus outbreak with the HMPV spreading rapidly, causing flu-like and COVID-19-like symptoms. While the virus is prevalent in China, it is reported to not be a  new and can also be detected in other parts of the country. Five young Kenyans, including popular cartoonist Kibet Bull, who went missing before Christmas, have been found alive. This comes amid escalating outrage over a wave of abductions, with rights groups reporting over 80 disappearances in the past six months, many involving government critics. While authorities deny involvement, activists point fingers at security forces. Kibet Bull announced his return on social media after his release on Monday, alongside others, who have reunited with their families. Despite these developments, at least 24 individuals remain unaccounted for. Meanwhile, in Mozambique, opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who has been leading deadly protests against disputed election results while outside the country, announced his return to the country. Mondlane plans to arrive ahead of the inauguration of the new president, Daniel Chapo, following an election marred by allegations of irregularities and violent clashes that have claimed hundreds of lives. Eighteen people have died and one baby has been seriously injured in a crash on the N3 at Van Reenen Pass involving a truck, taxi and a car. KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson, Ndabezinhle  Sibiya  says more people were trapped in the wreckage. It's alleged that the driver of the truck fled the scene. The N3 Toll Concession company says the pass has been closed while emergency services were attending to the scene. It says according to reports, the weather was poor, with heavy mist and dangerous driving conditions. There was a heavy backlog of traffic as vehicles were being stopped between the Pyramids Motel and Van Reenen town.
